The fact that Vessel opens with the five-minute rollercoaster trip that is Ode To Sleep tells you everything you need to know: this is an album that throws everything into the mix and then miraculously welds it all together to make something genuinely exceptional. Tyler described the opener as “strange” and “a song structure boot camp” – and although it is definitely both of those things, it also deftly sets the tone for what follows. Of course, while many of the album’s best songs (Holding On To You, Car Radio, Guns For Hands, Trees) appeared on Regional At Best, the production this time around is smoother, and there’s a cohesive flow between twenty-one pilots’ typically unexpected musical twists and turns that makes Vessel… well, pretty damn faultless, to be honest.

If you didn’t think much of Blurryface for whatever silly reason, consider this: not only did it become the first record in the digital era to have every single song receive at least a Gold certification from the Recording Industry Association of America, but it also remained on the Billboard Top 200 Album chart for four weeks. Whole. Years. That’s right: it never went away. And it’s not difficult to see – or hear – why. Tyler opened up in a remarkable way here, utilizing the character of Blurryface to dig headfirst into his own brain, once again providing millions of listeners with an endlessly riveting analysis of mental health.

Have we docked twenty-one pilots points for hiding for a full year and being cryptic with everyone while Tyler built the world of Trench behind the scenes? Maybe. In all seriousness, the depths that the pair reached on their amazing fifth album are just mind-boggling. Even if you thought you had the album down pat, you probably don’t. Away from Dema, the Banditos, the bishops, and everything else, the music on Trench are as enthralling as ever. Also, you must try to play this Which Twenty One Pilots Album Are You quiz.
Icy And Scaled (2021)
When it comes to Scaled And Icy, it appears that the circumstances in which it was published are a significant aspect of the conversation. Yes, it’s a terrific record in its own right, but it was also a breath of fresh air for fans – and the band – well over a year into the coronavirus pandemic. Tyler stated at the time of the album’s release that the band sought to avoid making a ‘lockdown album,’ but noted that the reverse happened: “I didn’t think that a dreary record was appropriate; the thought of escaping that was more intriguing to me,” he remarked.

At Best, Regional (2011)
Okay, this is a little strange. Simply said, if you haven’t heard twenty one pilots’ second full-length, you’ve probably already heard half of the songs on it, as they were later re-recorded for the band’s Fueled By Ramen debut Vessel (which we’ll get to later). Regional At Best is no longer readily available, therefore you’ll have to rely on YouTube to hear artists like Slowtown, Anathema, and Clear. But, whether you want to delve into these more obscure jewels or simply listen to ‘demo’ versions of some Vessel favorites, record number two has layers upon levels of experimental creativity to discover. Please, folks, consider a proper re-release.

It feels really unfair to place twenty one pilots’ self-titled debut at the bottom of this list. But isn’t that how these things work? Regardless, despite being written and recorded entirely by Tyler and then-members Nick Thomas and Chris Salih, the songwriting on this album is already excellent.
