Major League Baseball (MLB), a North American professional baseball organization created in 1903 by the merging of the two United States’ professional baseball leagues, the National League (NL) and the American League (AL) (AL).
Since their inception in the nineteenth century, the NL and AL have operated as separate organizations. Prior to the merger, the two leagues engaged in what was known as the “baseball war,” in which the Midwest-based AL expanded its teams into the established NL realm of the East Coast and wooed away great players from NL squads.
The leagues reached an agreement in 1903, which resulted in the creation of the World Series, which pitted the annual winners of each league against each other to determine a national champion, as well as the National Commission, a three-man governing body that oversaw Major League Baseball but was replaced by a single commissioner of baseball in 1921.
