The plot opens with Mrs. Whatsit’s arrival at the Murry house on a dark and stormy evening. Meg and Charles Wallace walk over to Mrs. Whatsit’s cabin the afternoon after Mrs. Whatsit’s visit. They meet Calvin O’Keefe, a popular student at Meg’s school who Charles regards as a kindred soul, on the way. Mrs. Whatsit and her companions Mrs. Who and Mrs. Which teach the three children that the cosmos is endangered by a tremendous evil known as the Dark Thing, which takes the appearance of a massive cloud and engulfs the stars around it. Several planets, including Camazotz, the planet where Mr. Murry is imprisoned, have already fallen to this wicked force.
The three Mrs. W’s transfer the youngsters to Camazotz and instruct them to stay in each other’s company while searching for Mr. Murry. Because the entire planet must adhere to the terrible rhythmic pulsing of IT, a massive disembodied brain, all objects and locations appear identical on Camazotz. Charles Wallace tries to resist IT with his superior brilliance but is defeated by the evil and transforms into a robot-like entity mouthing the words that IT infuses him with.

Under IT’s command, Charles leads Meg and Calvin to Mr. Murry, where they confront IT. They, too, are unable to fight IT’s might; they escape only at the last minute when Mr. Murry emerges and seizes Meg and Calvin, “testering” them away (going via another tesseract) to a gray planet called Ixchel, populated by tall, furry monsters who care for the visitors. Charles Wallace, a Camazotz prisoner, is still possessed by IT.
The three Mrs. W’s reappear on Planet Ixchel, and Meg understands she must travel alone back to Camazotz to save her brother. Mrs. Which informs her that she possesses one advantage that IT does not and that this advantage will be her weapon against evil. Meg, on the other hand, must find this weapon for herself. Meg recognizes what this is when she is in the presence of IT: her power to love. As a result of her focus on her love for Charles Wallace, she is able to restore him to his true identity. Meg frees Charles from IT’s grasp and testers with him through time and space, eventually arriving at her twin brothers’ vegetable garden on Earth, where her father and Calvin await. The family joyfully reunites, and Mrs. W’s stop by the pleasant scene on their way to their next destination.
