As pandemic stay-at-home orders drove us to stay at home last March, one show appeared to unite the country: Netflix’s “Tiger King.” The story of zoo owner Joe Exotic and his murder-for-hire plan against fellow tiger fanatic Carole Baskin was bound to catch people’s attention – Joe’s aesthetic alone! — but this went above and above. People loved it, despised it, hated it, and labeled it a guilty pleasure in equal measure. But was it ever intended to be more than a one-time phenomenon? The answer is certainly no, according to “Tiger King 2,” which Netflix is legally dubbing the second season of the first “Tiger King” run.

Editor’s Picks

It’s a stretch to call this season a docuseries, as the five episodes feel like a jumble of ideas looking for a tale to convey. Joe Exotic, previously the show’s central point is now only a peripheral relationship on which the sitcom hangs its hat. With Mr. Exotic now imprisoned, the first episode follows Eric Love, a guy who was so confident that the tiger impresario would be pardoned by then-President Donald Trump that he had a car waiting for Exotic at the prison. Whereas Season 1 focused on Exotic and a number of other entitled guys who believed tigers made them powerful, Season 2 focuses on the number of opportunists who have emerged from the woodwork to grab their own 15 minutes of fame from Netflix’s series.

It’s difficult not to feel that this season is a snake eating its tail, beginning with an opening that reminds us of “Tiger King’s” triumph as if anyone watching could forget. This becomes regular throughout the season, with the repeated repeating of past sequences as if there’s a conviction that the viewer has forgotten what they’ve already seen. In some circumstances, replaying key scenes just serves to remind viewers of how terrible the show is. This season has a backhanded apology tone, with characters admitting, “Yes, [this] was horrible,” yet the episodes continue to relish in analyzing and chronicling the same problems with no new insight. Consider animal cruelty. The first season was chastised for repeatedly showing. In the first episode, someone mentions how “the genuine victims are the animals,” before successive episodes show evidence of new animal atrocities and, in the end, an earlier film of Joe Exotic torturing tigers from “Tiger King” Season 1. The series concludes with footage of Exotic and Jeff Lowe’s “rehomed” tigers in a natural refuge, which will make you want to heave up even more. Because, sure, this second season was produced solely to demonstrate why these creatures should be released back into the wild.

About the quiz

And that’s not even getting into Carole Baskin, Season 1’s adversary. People grew so enthralled with Joe Exotic that they forgot the misogyny he (and others) directed at Baskin, with him going so far as to say he wanted to “chop her head off,” as mentioned in the first episode of this season by one of the few female voices given significant screentime. The series appears to say, “We apologize,” and then devotes two of the five episodes to the question of whether Baskin murdered her husband, Don Lewis. “We’re sorry,” the message appears to be, “but it’s acceptable because she probably murdered someone as well.”

Perhaps it’s because we’re not cooped up in our houses, starving for amusement, but it’s difficult to ignore how cruel, vicious, and unfeeling these issues are. Exotic at least attempted to delve into who he was as a man, demonstrating why he was both an intriguing and dangerous person. Everything feels as though a camera was handed to these individuals with the instruction, “Say whatever you want!” In an episode featuring fellow zoo owner Tim Stark and the animal abuse allegations leveled against him, he goes on long rants to the camera, calling a group of women in a courthouse nasty names, and referring to a news reporter as a “bitch” when she’s trying to secure an interview. Don’t forget Eric Love’s visit to the Capital on January 6, when they hope their “Free Joe Exotic” banner will be spotted during the insurgency.
