Rio, the animated film, will be released on DVD and Blu-ray this week. Rio, starring Jessie Eisenberg (The Social Network) as a socially awkward and flightless parrot on the run from exotic bird smugglers in Brazil, may appeal to children but offers nothing new in the slew of CGI flicks made in recent years.
Rio, directed by Carlos Saldanha, is a brightly colored family adventure with a few songs and a fantastically nasty bad guy. Aside from that, it’s harmless and nice, but also uninspiring. The visuals are acceptable but not remarkable, and the tale is ordinary fare. The songs are unmemorable.
Rio is a step forward from Saldanha’s previous work, Robots (which was bad) and The Ice Age series, which are among the most overrated animated films ever made. Even so, small children will appreciate it. Rio doesn’t have a strong supporting cast, but the heroes are put in enough outlandish circumstances to keep the film going quickly. There’s nothing really offensive about the film; it’s mostly harmless and, at its finest, cute.
Rio will appeal to children and adults alike, but there are far better-animated films on the market.
This repeat trip to South America is so crammed with subplots and unnecessary new characters that it scarcely stops flapping its plot-propelling wings for a second. As a result, “Rio 2” becomes less about the birds and more about the birds.
The 2011 original dared to address the topic of severe poverty in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil’s frenetic party capital while following a couple of rare blue macaws who fell in love despite their differences. The way the furry-and-feathered wisecrackers were anchored by seductive cultural flourishes, rump-shaking rhythms, and real-world metropolitan surroundings set that adventure apart from previous recent cartoon flights of imagination.
Instead, we have to cope with an avian version of “Meet the Parents,” a less-than-engaging eco-message against chopping down habitats, a soccer match in the skies, and a jungle version of Amazon’s Got Talent in which a slew of exotic creatures audition as Carnaval artists.

Timid Blu (Jesse Eisenberg, with his nebbishy vocal peculiarities) and untamed Jewel (Anne Hathaway, at her best when carrying a tune) are blissfully nesting together with their three children—except that Mama Bird yearns for a life that is more back to nature and less reliant on human-provided luxuries. When another blue macaw is believed to have been discovered in the Amazon, Jewel persuades her clan to make the 2,000-mile journey to meet other members of their species. Once again, energetic toucan Rafael (George Lopez), cardinal Pedro (will.i.am), and canary Nico are along for the voyage as expected comic relief (Jamie Foxx).
Blu’s obsessive attachment to his fanny pack, which is stocked with travel necessities like an electric toothbrush, breath mints, and a portable GPS (note to filmmakers: “recalculating” gags have long passed their expiration date). When Jewel reunites with her father, the brusquely judgmental and brushcut-sporting Eduardo, he experiences Ben Stiller’s sorrow as Gaylord Focker (Andy Garcia, doing a Latin-flavored De Niro impression). The arrival of Jewel’s boyhood chum, the bedroom-eyed preening crooner Roberto, adds a spice of jealousy to Blu’s humiliation (Bruno Mars).
