Since the premiere of Pretty Little Liars in 2010, the girls have been plagued by a series of shadowy characters who only go by the letter A. Then there was Mona, who used her time as A to exact revenge on Alison for making her high school years a horrible nightmare, and CeCe/Charlotte, who was angry with the entire DiLaurentis family for locking her away in Radley.
Now that Charlotte is no longer alive, the Liars must deal with another monster known as Uber A, but there have been so many detours and red herrings along the way that it’s difficult to remember who was A at what moment and why. Here’s a comprehensive timeline to help you remember everything that’s happened in Rosewood from that fateful day when the Liars received their first A texts.
Spencer, Aria, Emily, and Hanna begin receiving messages from someone named ‘A’ one year after Alison DiLaurentis goes missing. They initially suspect it could be Ali, who had not yet been certified dead at the time, but once Maya’s family discovers Ali’s remains in their yard, the Liars conclude it can’t be Ali.

A’s communications typically include references to the girls’ secrets, either from the present or from the days before Ali went away, as well as assignments for the girls to complete. In one episode, for example, A encourages Hanna to purchase a box of cupcakes, eat them in public, and then puke them up afterward. A also manipulates circumstances affecting those close to the Liars in order to encourage them to tell on each other in exchange for keeping their own secrets hidden. The Liars continue to seek A on their own after being accused of lying about Ian’s death. They uncover Ian’s death early in the season, along with a suicide note in which he confesses to killing Ali. They eventually discover that he did commit suicide, but the note was fabricated by A. Meanwhile, A ramps up her shenanigans, breaking into the girls’ therapist’s office, poisoning Emily’s pain cream with human growth hormone, and mailing them a box full of dolls designed to appear like them.
While trying to figure out who A is, the Liars learn about the N.A.T. Club, which includes Ian, Jason, and Garrett. The N.A.T. Club has A-like traits in that it says on Rosewood citizens and secretly videotapes the Liars, although they are not A and maybe one of A’s indirect targets. Jenna has a vested interest in keeping the N.A.T. Club a secret because they have a video showing her pressuring her stepbrother Toby into a love connection.

After Mona travels to Radley to deal with her fixation with the Liars, the girls try to figure out if Garrett was the one who killed Ali. Despite the fact that Mona has apparently abandoned her Aways, the Liars continue to receive texts from A that are considerably more dangerous than they were in the first two seasons – “Mona played with dolls, I play with body parts.” Toby infiltrates the new A-Team in order to learn out what’s going on. Spencer is traumatized by his betrayal and subsequent “death” (staged by Mona) and is admitted to Radley.
Spencer also briefly joins the A-Team to find out what happened to Toby. Mona explains in the season finale that someone named Red Coat stole “the A-game” from her while she was in Radley. She has no idea who Red Coat is, but Red Coat is in power, according to Mona.
The Liars are still looking for A/Red Coat, but they have also come to believe that Alison is still alive. They discover at least two Red Coats, one of them is CeCe Drake, who claims to be assisting Alison, who is alive, in danger, and also dressed in a red coat. The Liars assume Ezra is A after uncovering an apartment full of surveillance equipment owned by him, despite his claim that he was working on a book about Alison’s abduction. Jessica DiLaurentis, Ali’s mother, is A, according to Ezra. Jessica is later murdered, and A is seen burying her body, but the identity of her assailant remains unknown.
