Kanye Omari West was born on June 8, 1977, in Atlanta, Georgia. Ray, his father, was a photojournalist for the Atlanta Journal newspaper and a member of the Black Panthers; he eventually became a Christian counselor. Donda West, West’s mother, was a teacher who went on to become a professor of English at Chicago State University and subsequently her son’s manager before dying at the age of 58 from heart illness following cosmetic surgery in 2007. Her death would have a tremendous musical and psychological impact on West.
When West was three years old, Ray and Donda split peacefully. After that, he was reared by his mother in Chicago’s middle-class South Shore neighborhood, and he spent summers with his father. West traveled to China with Donda when he was 10 years old, where she taught as part of a university exchange program; he was the only foreigner in his class. West was lured to the South Side’s hip-hop scene after returning to Chicago, and he befriended DJ and producer No I.D., who became his mentor. West graduated from Polaris High School and received a scholarship to study at Chicago’s American Academy of Art — but dropped out to pursue music full-time, an act that inspired the title of his first solo album years later. West grew up in Chicago, the son of a photographer and former Black Panther father and a college professor mother, and attended Chicago State University for a year before dropping out to pursue a career in music. Early in his career, he displayed his tremendous ability as a producer, contributing to Jermaine Dupri’s album Life in 1472 (1998) before going to New York City, where he gained his fame with his production work for Roc-A-Fella Records, particularly on rapper Jay-album Z’s Blueprint (2001).
West’s deft use of accelerated sample-based beats quickly made him a popular producer, but he fought to be allowed to make his recordings (partly because of the perception that his middle-class background denied his credibility as a rapper). When he finally released his debut solo album, The College Dropout (2004), it was a huge success: sales skyrocketed, and critics praised its sonic sophistication and clever wordplay, which blended humor, faith, insight, and political awareness on songs like “Through the Wire” and the gospel-choir-backed “Jesus Walks.” In 2005, West received a Grammy Award for the best rap song, as well as awards for best rap album and best rhythm-and-blues song (as one of the songwriters of Alicia Keys’ “You Don’t Know My Name”).

Late Registration (2005), West’s second album, duplicated the commercial success of his debut, with several hit singles including “Diamonds from Sierra Leone” and “Gold Digger,” and garnered him three more Grammy Awards. He also gained notoriety for his widely quoted claim that the federal government’s slow response to the Hurricane Katrina disaster in New Orleans in 2005 demonstrated that U.S. President George W. Bush “doesn’t care about black people”—a remark that Bush later described as one of his worst moments as president.
Kanye’s motivation. Kanye’s perseverance would serve him well when he decided to devote all of his focus to music. He attended the American Academy of Art on scholarship for one semester, but his family couldn’t afford to pay once the grant expired, so he switched to Chicago State University, where his mother taught English. He eventually resigned that as well to pursue music. His mother was heartbroken, but she agreed to let him live under her roof if he paid her rent. She gave him a year to figure things out.

He’d come home from work and spend all of his time working on his music. Kanye “would be up until 4 a.m…. working on my dream and yearning for the day where I could simply do that all the time,” according to Jake Brown’s biography of the rapper.
