I knew Hadestown was going to be amazing the moment I walked inside Walter Kerr Theatre on a sweltering August day. The stage told a story in and of itself. The pit has ceased to be a pit. Instead, all of the musicians were on stage, with the production’s behind-the-scenes equipment on display: two accordions on one side, a piano on the other, and a number of stands. Everything about it was personal.

Despite winning eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Hadestown did not feel impersonal. It had the feel of a narrative. Anas Mitchell manages to leverage the influence of a story written thousands of years ago to make a series of reflections on climate change, isolationism, and capitalism by deftly combining myth and politics into a complicated metaphor. However, the human inclination for storytelling trumps all.

The myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, as well as the legendary story of Hades and Persephone, are both retold in Hadestown. The plot is set in 1930s New Orleans, where the Underworld is a factory town governed by Hades (Patrick Page) and, for half the year, Persephone (Amber Gray). Times are hard for Eurydice (Eva Noblezada), and she struggles from place to place, blown to and fro by the wind, which is personified by the three Fates (Jewelle Blackman, Kay Trinidad, and Yvette Gonzalez-Nacer) Then she meets Orpheus (Reeve Carney), a naive young man working on a song that will “put the world back into tune.” In the boisterous opening track “Road to Hell,” each member of the crew gets their own time of introduction.

Orpheus and Eurydice’s story is a tragedy. Hermes (André De Shield) tells us this as he appears to pull the entire stage into his orbit in the opening song. Eurydice dies and is carried to the underworld, just as in the original narrative. Orpheus, distressed, sings to the gods, pleading with them to help him enter the underworld without dying, and they comply. While there, he begs Hades to return his bride, and after hearing him sing, Hades agrees to let him bring Eurydice back on one condition: Eurydice must follow him and Orpheus must not look back.

Because it’s a tragedy, Orpheus, of course, glances back. Eurydice is returned to the underworld. We go into the musical knowing this, but we still forget. That is Hadestown’s miracle. It takes an old song and makes us live it rather than just watch it. It’s astonishing that spoilers don’t matter in an era where narrative twists are sometimes the main attraction of entertainment. Spoiler alert: Orpheus is looking back.

About the quiz

Everyone knew this before they walked into the theater, but there was a gasp in the enveloping hush that followed his fateful sight. The true heartbreaking beauty of Hadestown is not in its ending; it is in everything that comes before it.

The universe of gods and men is shattered from the start. Persephone, the goddess of spring, ushers in winter by visiting Hadestown. But Hades, who is jealous and terrified of her, has been detaining her for longer and longer, extending the dreadful winter. “When was the last time you saw a spring or a fall / I can’t remember.”

Persephone was not taken in a glorified rape in this incarnation. Instead, she and Hades were in love until their relationship deteriorated and Hades created Hadestown, his “neon necropolis.” Persephone diverts her attention by creating a “river of wine” and an underground speakeasy-style side business for the workers. Gray staggers and growls across the stage with amazing performance as this enterprise is disclosed in “Our Lady of the Underground.” She gives vitality to not only the planet, but also the stage.
