Brian Froud’s association with Jim Henson began with the 1982 film “The Dark Crystal,” where he designed the complete aesthetic for the world of Thra, which was replete with odd creatures, vegetation, and structures. Gelflings are strange, fey beings smaller than humans yet similar enough to humans to appear familiar. When it came to converting the designs into three-dimensional puppets, this provided a hurdle.
“They are our human representatives in a bizarre world where everything is strange, everything is living, rocks move and sing, and nothing is quite as it seems,” Froud explained. “We had to tell the sculptors that these are not human, but rather animal-like.” The goal was to make them have an otherworldly quality but also be empathic because they have been through a lot and are sharing their tale as our story.”
He’s back as the creature designer for Netflix’s prequel series “Age of Resistance” with his son, senior costume & creature supervisor Toby Froud, some 40 years later.

“The Vapra are of the mountains and the air.” “They are the superior clan of Gelfling, not only because the All-Maudra is the leader of that clan, but also because the All-Maudra is the head of all Gelflings in their civilization,” Froud explained. “They’re pale, and they think they’re higher up.” They despise Grottans and look down on them.”

“They are the Gelfling clan from the marshes, and they are the most aquatic, wetland, swamp-like Gelfling clan.” “They have the sense of algae and moss, a seaweed-like aspect to them,” Froud stated.
Clan Sifa
“The Sifas are obviously the sailors, they are the sea, they travel far and wide by ship,” Froud explained. “They, too, are gypsies.” They have that sort of bright, pirate-like aspect to them. But they also don’t trust other clans.”
Clan Dousan
“The Dousan, then, are nomads from the deserts.” They’re also the most secretive, and they’re not seen by many people because they keep to themselves,” Froud explained. “They have green patterns and painting on their bodies, and their skin changes colors.” Whether it’s because they ate berries or because of heredity. They have a special relationship with geometry and magic that other Gelfling are unaware of.
