Japanese anime FLCL debuted in 2000, and it’s much different from Studio Ghibli’s work. In the story, a 12-year-old boy named Naota gets hit in the head with a blue Rickenbacker 4001 guitar after being run over by a woman – subsequently revealed to be an alien. From there, robots fight each other in the horn, while Haruko hunts down the mighty Pirate King, and a big iron threatens to destroy Earth.
However, despite only having six episodes, FLCL had a major impact on anime lovers all over the world, especially in the US. There is no doubt that FLCL is quirky, unexpected, and difficult to understand, but that’s a hallmark of much excellent anime, and it works for FLCL. It’s simultaneously a story about growing up.
