Before they became the Beatles, John, Paul, George, and Ringo were just four Liverpool teenagers. Never in their wildest dreams could John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr have thought they would go on to become one of the most successful bands in modern history, impacting popular culture not only in music, but also in fashion, cinema, and global representation.
It was difficult to imagine a band from the relatively poor northwest port city of Liverpool, England, getting a gig in the thriving London music scene of the south, let alone exporting their eventual homegrown success to a world eagerly opening up to the counter-culture movement of the ’60s and the burgeoning phenomenon known as rock ‘n’ roll in the late 1950s and early 1960s.

It all started in 1957, with a chance meeting between two music-obsessed teens. Sixteen-year-old Lennon, the son of a merchant marine, was performing with the Quarrymen, a skiffle (folk music mixed with jazz or blues) band hired to perform at a church fete in Woolton, Liverpool. The Quarrymen’s bass player introduced Lennon to a classmate, 15-year-old McCartney, who would join in on a few of numbers that night and shortly be granted a permanent seat with the Quarrymen. McCartney, the son of a previous band member and a nurse, was supposed to make his debut with the group in October, but things didn’t go as planned. “I was handed a guitar solo on ‘Guitar Boogie’ for my first engagement.” “I could play it effortlessly in rehearsal, so they decided to make it my solo,” McCartney explained in the Anthology documentary. “Everything was good, but when the moment came in the performance, I had sticky palms and wondered, ‘What am I doing here?'” I was just too scared; it was a big occasion with everyone gazing at the guitarist. It was impossible for me. That’s why George was called in.”
Harrison, the son of a bus driver and a shop assistant, joined the Quarrymen as lead guitarist when he was 15 years old. His guitar licks, influenced by rockabilly, would help create the group’s early sound. Despite continuing to perform as the Quarrymen, Lennon, McCartney, and Harrison would go on to form the basis of what would become the Beatles.

Sutcliffe and Lennon are frequently credited with coining the term “Beatles,” while various legends about the band’s origins abound. Lennon and McCartney would frequently go away together, playing acoustic gigs in local taverns, forging a friendship that would become the foundation of their future singer-songwriter partnership. “John and I used to hitchhike places together,” McCartney says in Barry Miles’ Paul McCartney: Many Years From Now. “It was something we did a lot together; strengthening our connection, getting to know each other’s feelings, hopes, and objectives.” It was a fantastic time. “I remember it with tremendous fondness.”
