Ymir, the Giant’s Ancestor

The Norse pantheon, like most mythology, including Mesopotamian and Egyptian, included a primal being in the shape of Ymir, the ancestor of all jötnar (mythic entities that ranged from giants to other fantastical creatures). Ymir was viewed as the ‘first being’ who was created by the ice of Niflheim mixed with the heat of Muspelheim long before the existence of the Earth, as opposed to a rigid categorization as one of the Norse gods. And, following his origin, Ymir, with his hermaphroditic body, was in charge of giving birth to a male, female, and other mythological entities, who would thereafter bear subsequent generations.

Editor’s Picks

Odin – The Aesir Gods’ King

Odin (inn in Old Norse), the ruler of the sir tribe of gods, was probably the most respected yet enigmatic of all Norse gods. Odin had always been a prominent figure in the pantheon of Germanic mythology, as evidenced by Tacitus’ late 1st-century AD work Germania (where Odin is seen as the equivalent of Roman god Mercury). And, given his mythical hegemony over the Germanic people’s cultural framework, Odin was connected with a variety of (sometimes opposed) qualities, ranging from wisdom, healing, and royalty to death, sorcery, and even frenzy. Frigg – The Aesir Gods’ Queen

Frigg was regarded as the Queen of the Sir and the Goddess of the Sky and was possibly the most important of all Norse deities in their pantheon. Furthermore, because of her special status as Odin’s wife, the deity was usually linked with fertility, household, maternity, marriage, and even domestic issues. In essence, of all the Norse gods, it was Frigg’s legendary qualities that were most closely associated with the supposed happiness of family life.

Thor – Asgard’s Loyal Defender

With his burly power and noisy antics, Thor (órr in Old Norse), the god of thunder, represented the strong warrior who was accorded high respect in the Germanic society of ancient and early medieval times. Thor, the son of Odin and his wife Fjörgyn (not to be confused with Frigg), was acclaimed as the loyal and stalwart defender of the sir’s stronghold of Asgard, implying his symbolic duty as the protector of the orderly cosmos.

About the quiz

Balder – The Light and Purity God

Balder, or Baldur (Baldr in Old Norse), the younger son of Odin and Frigg, and half-brother of Thor, was revered as the patron god of light and purity. He was also praised as a fair, clever, and courteous divine creature whose beauty awed even the most elegant blossoms in front of him. His residence Breidablik in Asgard was considered the most elegant of all halls in the Norse gods’ citadel, showcasing gilded silver components and decorated pillars that only permitted the purest of hearts to enter.

Vidar – The Vengeful Silent God

Vidar (or Varr in Old Norse, potentially translating to ‘vast ruler’) was the son of Odin and the jötunn Grid (or Grr) and was represented as the’silent’ deity of wrath. His association with a vengeance is most likely derived from the foretelling of how he would avenge his father’s (Odin’s) death by killing the fearsome Fenrir, the giant wolf, at Ragnarok. Surprisingly, he is also one of the few prominent Norse gods to survive the final fight (and “then reside on the field of Idavoll”).
