Fans have been asking for years when League of Legends developer Riot would create an animated series. It seems to be unavoidable. Previously, the studio made beautiful animated videos to promote everything from new characters to esports competitions. With an increased emphasis on broadening League’s storytelling — something difficult to do inside the limits of a team-based strategy game — a show made a lot of sense. Arcane, a nine-episode series, has made it a reality. The best part is that not only is it a lot of fun, but you don’t need to know anything about League to enjoy it.
Early on, Arcane is set (mostly) in the city of Piltover, which is on the verge of a major change that could affect the entire fantasy realm of Runeterra: a pair of scientists are figuring out a way to harness the dangerous power of magic for use in everything from weapons to tools to transportation. Against this setting, the show follows a few characters as they go throughout the city. Things begin with a street youngster named Vi leading a small gang to a big score, traveling to the city’s outskirts to steal some expensive-looking electronics. Naturally, the theft fails and ends with some exploding crystals. The focus then changes to the aforementioned scientists and an underground boss with several wounds and a deep animosity.

What’s fantastic about Arcane’s fantasy-meets-steampunk world is how simple it is to grasp. The show doesn’t waste time with exposition, and it doesn’t assume you already know who these characters are. Vi, for example, is one of League’s most popular characters, although the episode primarily acts as an origin narrative for her and a few other characters. It’s a cool chance for fans to see how some of these characters came to be — you even learn about Vi’s iconic gauntlets — but for everyone else, it’s a chance to meet interesting individuals at a critical juncture in their life. It helps that the story is relatively simple. Arcane has nothing that I would term novel or groundbreaking. It’s a fairly normal fantasy story that happens to be quite beautifully done. The villains are terrifying, the would-be heroes are clumsy and relatable, the action is thrilling to watch, and everything happens at a breakneck pace. The nicest thing Arcane has going for it is its sleek appearance. Each frame appears to be a work of hand-painted concept art; in action, it’s unlike anything I’ve ever seen. It’s also a universe that seems completely realized and lived in. Piltover’s slums have a toxic green appearance (police officers even wear masks when they enter), whereas the higher levels are bright, airy, and affluent. I was particularly taken with all of the odd mechanical wonders that keep the city alive and humming. What I mean is, after viewing the first few episodes, I’m dying for an Arcane art book.
About the quiz
One of the more intriguing aspects of the show is the manner in which it is being released. It’s not an all-you-can-eat binge, nor are new episodes released on a weekly basis. Arcane, on the other hand, employs a hybrid format. The nine episodes are separated into chapters and will be delivered in three-episode bundles over three weeks. (It’s evocative of Netflix’s experimental Fear Street horror trilogy.) For the first chapter, at least, it works well because each of the three episodes has its own distinct storyline, while episode four picks up some time later, albeit I’ve only gotten so far.
Arcane treads a tight line early on. It’s a memorial as well as an introduction to a massive fantasy world that’s been operating for a decade and has millions of fans. Those who watch will discover a plot with some exciting Easter eggs and a closer look at characters who have been around for a long time. Everyone else is in for a surprisingly exciting experience that isn’t lacking in style. The most startling thing for newbies would be being encouraged to play League of Legends itself, which lacks the elegance and speed that make the program work so effectively.
