The contemporary era of shonen manga is a thrilling one. We live in a diverse and experimental world of manga in general. And, for shonen manga to remain relevant, it must also experiment. As a result, we are witnessing a trend in modern shonen manga: an infusion of horror.
What American comics experienced in the 1990s, shonen manga (and Korean manhwa) is experiencing now (though these mangas are doing a far, far better job of exploring new ground). As a result, here’s a small disclaimer:
This list starts with the most popular current shonen manga and progresses to more recent, obscure, dark, and mature material. Some of this manga has been turned into anime, while others have not (some will be).

What Manga Should I Read quiz
Before we go into this list of modern shonen comics, let’s go through the definition of shonen manga.
Simply put, shonen manga is manga geared towards a young male readership. There are several caveats to this. Shonen/shounen/translates to “youth,” with the character meaning “little” and the year meaning “year.”
The word shonen/shounen is gender-neutral in Japanese, although it refers to young boys especially (with shojo/shoujo/ signifying young lady — thus, shoujo manga has its genre). Also, you must try to play this What Manga Should I Read quiz.
As a result, shonen manga has many of the themes and tropes that young boys identify with. That method may appear archaic — and I surely agree — but it is still relevant to the shonen manga genre today.
Male protagonists are common in shonen manga. It is frequently set in a fanciful world with elements of science fiction, magic, or the supernatural. Shonen manga is also known for its action and combat (thus the creation of the ‘battle shonen manga’ sub-genre).
You may have heard of the Korean web novel boom online. It is one of the most popular East Asian programs ever. Solo Leveling occurs on an alternate Earth where portals have emerged, connecting our reality to a parallel dimension teeming with monsters. Jinwoo is a hunter who fights these monsters, although he is frail. The world’s weakest hunter. When a raid goes wrong, he awakens from a coma to discover he’s been fitted with a “system” that allows him to become stronger.
About the quiz
Jujutsu Kaisen is not a brand-new manga. The first book did not come out this year, or even last year. Although it was released in Japan in 2018, the anime adaption was one of the top hits of the Fall 2020 and Winter 2021 seasons. It follows Yuji Itadori, a seemingly ordinary high school student who eats a cursed thing. As a result, he now possesses one of the most powerful evil spirits within his body, and to contain the threat, Yuji must enter the brutal and restrictive realm of Jujutsu sorcerers.
We don’t always want to read about demons or watch a continual action series. Sometimes we want something low-stakes, relaxed, and chill. Days on Fes follows a teen girl whose best friend introduces her to the world of music festivals.
The light book category is dominated by isekai, a genre in which the protagonist transmigrates to another planet.
