To say that Jesus is the Lord of your life indicates that He is the ruler, leader, and master of your entire life. He cannot be Lord of a portion of life; he must be granted command of the entire life – the entire life.

When considering a person’s entire life, we must consider the numerous aspects that comprise a person. “Now may the God of peace Himself purify you; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be maintained blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ,” Paul wrote. I Thessalonians 5:23 (NJKV). Paul emphasizes that the entire individual is made up of spirit, soul, and body. A person has an inner, secret, unseen-by-natural-eye part of existence, as well as an outward, visible, and public life that is seen and heard by people with whom he interacts daily. Jesus aspires to be Lord of The Seen and the Unseen, of the Visible and the Invisible, of the Private and the Public elements of our lives. He wants to be Lord of both our spiritual and bodily lives.

The mind, emotion, and will are all contained within the inner sanctuary, the spirit, and the soul. We think, feel, choose, decide, dream, and plan with our spirit and soul. I recently read a blog article in which the author discussed how the Savior plays an important role in her daily life. I was glad she was willing to share her sentiments, but one reader’s reaction devastated me: “He is of no relevance whatsoever in my life—never has been and never will be.”

That reader couldn’t be more mistaken. We will all require the Savior at some point in our lives. We all make mistakes we can’t undo, suffer losses we can’t recover from, and endure sorrows, persecution, tragedies, burdens, and disappointments we can’t bear on our own.

The good news is that we don’t have to deal with them on our own.

“In times of weakness, we may exclaim, ‘No one knows what it’s like.’ No one comprehends.’ But the Son of God knows and understands precisely because He has felt and borne our specific burdens,” said Quorum of the Twelve Apostles Elder David A. Bednar. “And He has perfect empathy and can extend His arm of mercy to us because of His immeasurable and eternal sacrifice (see Alma 34:14).” 1

Jesus is significant to us because, through His Atonement, teachings, hope, peace, and example, He assists us in changing our lives, facing our hardships, and moving forward with faith as we return to Him and His Father.

About the quiz

One of the reasons Jesus is so vital to those who truly seek to follow Him is because we all fall short and require the gift of repentance provided by the Atonement.

When we stumble and fall, Satan wants us to believe we aren’t good enough to get back up and back on track. He also wants us to overlook the fact that the gospel is “the gospel of repentance” (D&C 13:1; emphasis added). But we know that “Christ’s grace is real, offering both forgiveness and cleansing to the repentant sinner.” 2

The Atonement of Jesus Christ is available to each of us, but we must choose to let it work in our lives. Consider presenting a particular gift to a friend—something that your friend truly requires and that you prepared with personal sacrifice. Imagine your friend saying, “Thank you, but I don’t want your gift.” What would your reaction be?

When we do not invite Jesus to assist us in becoming clean via repentance, it is as though we are rejecting His gift.
