When you think about it, the concept of fate might be a little perplexing.
On the one hand, we create our reality—100% of it, no exceptions. As a result, nothing can truly be labeled predetermined.
We, on the other hand, arrive with a specific “set up” of energies—talents, skills, and gifts that are distinctively ours. We also have some “opportunities” built-in, such as growing up in a free country or being born into a wealthy household.
So what’s the deal? Is our destiny predetermined? And if that’s the case, how can one claim that “we created it all”?
My work in the field of conscious creation, I believe, is part of my destiny. A psychic told me in 1992 that this was my life’s job. “Yippee!” “Now I know what I’m going to do with my life!” I said. I went out and made a six-tape collection and a notebook… and it was a colossal flop.

It was, indeed, unsatisfactory. But I did the only thing I knew how to do: I forgave myself and let it go. I planned to return to teaching the law of attraction someday, but I prioritized happiness in my life and let the world handle the technicalities (the universe is so good at that).
I feel that one of the reasons we need “lessons” is that many of us have certain illusions regarding fate. Let’s take a look at a few prevalent myths…
There is only one path to my destiny – Destiny is energy—of fulfillment, satisfaction, expression, love, and commitment—that can present itself in a variety of ways. Furthermore, destiny appears differently at different points along the route. It will take time to prepare for your destiny, refine your skills, and grow into it. And yet, every step along the route to that final destination is as significant as the destination itself—even the “mistakes” made along the way.
One of the biggest “mistakes” I made was spending three years in graduate school, pursuing an MBA and a JD, before realizing it wasn’t my calling.
Yes, I could have concentrated on the three years and thousands of dollars “squandered.” But, in reality, those years were more important to my self-esteem than anything else could have been at the time. I honestly didn’t think I was very bright before law school. That experience gave me the confidence I needed, as well as critical insights that I eventually applied in my businesses.

Destiny is predetermined to occur – Destiny is a decision. You have the option of remaining on the merry-go-round of “shoulds” and “ought to” and never pursuing your destiny at all—you are the one who makes the decision.
Destiny does not happen suddenly – it happens over the course of a lifetime. It is the emergence of your true self. Destiny is a present that must be unwrapped over time—a gift from you, to yourself, and to the world.
