The jets, a finger-snapping street gang commanded by the Riff (Russ Tamblyn), are now at war with the upstart Puerto Rican sharks, led by Bernardo, after their dismal neighborhood for years (George Chakiris). The riff is planning to challenge the Sharks to rumble in a barrio dance and asks his old fellow Tony (Richard Beymer)
Though it was he who established the Jets with the Riff, Tony is out of the game—he got a job. But he agrees to come to aid his pal. Lately, Tony feels that it’s going to happen to him something fantastic.
The Jets are waiting for the Sharks in the drugstore. Discuss what weapons they could use. Doc is angry that the boys plan to fight. Anybody, who tries to join the Jets, asks the Riff whether she may participate, but he doesn’t. Doc doesn’t know why the lads trouble the Puerto Ricans, and the boys say the Sharks trouble them. Doc calls them hoodlums and Action is really upsetting. The riff warns you that you need to save your steam and keep it cool instead of being scammed out (“Cool”). Bernardo reaches the pharmacy and he and Riff start to lay down the rumble terms. Tony appears and convinces everyone, only skin, not weapons, to consent to fair combat. Bernardo agrees that he will be able to fight against Tony, but the Jets say they can take up their fight. The Sharks’ best man is the Jets’ best man. Schrank’s coming and the council’s breaking up. He says he is going out to the Puerto Ricans. His exit from the gang was Bernardo. Schrank tries to get the jets to disclose the rumbling situation and is more frustrated if they refuse to do so. He offends and leaves them. As the shop is closed by Tony and Doc, Tony admits he’s on a Puerto Rican love. Doc’s anxious. Doc is concerned.
The next day Maria tells Anita that she can leave at the bridal shop, as Maria is going to clean up. When Tony comes, Anita is about to go. Suddenly she understands and pledges not to say anything about them. Tony tells Maria that when she departs, it’s going to be a fair fight but it’s not acceptable to her. She’s asking Maria to go to hell to end this fight. He’s okay. For her, he is going to do everything. You fantasize that you’re married and together (“One Hand, One Heart”). Later the ensemble members wait for the fight with anticipation, for various reasons (“Tonight Quintet”).
Bernardo warns Maria to keep Tony away. In the meantime, the war council is established up by Bernardo. In the Doc drug store, where Tony works, he and the Riff resolve to thrash out the rules. (Apparently, instead of simply cutting the chase off and trying to kill any other guys you can, you need rules for rumbling.)

Meanwhile, Bernardo’s sister, Maria (Natalie Wood), and her girlfriend Anita (Rita Moreno) are working in the bridal shop, preparing for the dance. Tony and Maria look across the room in the affair, both of whom are struck immediately. Bernardo catches them dancing and commands Maria to go home. Bernardo and Riff agree to have Doc’s store later with the war council.
Anita argues to Bernardo in her home that Maria is entitled to dance with anybody she likes but she disagrees with Bernardo. Tony arrives to meet Maria after leaving for the war council. Tony then goes to the War Council, persuading both sides to consent to a modest battle of two, one of each gang. He told Doc afterward about his Maria love.
