In 2008, Tom Holland was twelve years old when he joined the cast of “Billy Elliot: The Musical.” The play, based on the 2000 film, tells the story of a young boy who is discovered missing his boxing class in order to attend a girls-only ballet class instead (per IMDB). Holland had been taking dance courses for a few years at the time, and he was found by a choreographer and ended up applying for the role. Holland landed the title part as a result of a chain of events (per GQ). Also, you must try to play this Tom Holland Quiz.
Holland later noted that, while learning ballet had a major impact on the trajectory of his life, he had to face some very serious bullying at the time. Other pupils at school, he said GQ in 2019, would frequently peer in on his lectures, which took place at school around lunchtime. “To a bunch of 10-year-olds who all play rugby, Tom Holland dancing ballet in the gym isn’t that cool,” he explained.
At the age of 12, the actor made his West End debut as the titular character in September 2008 at the Victoria Palace Theatre.
Holland revealed in a 2017 interview with “Spider-Man: Homecoming” co-star Jacob Batalon for Moviefone that his first kiss was with one of the girls who portrayed Debbie in the play.
“I dared to have a kiss with her,” Holland recounted. “I was dared by a buddy since I was madly in love with her, but she had no intention of kissing me. She dared me, and I made out with her for three seconds. It was beautiful.”
About the quiz
Holland has previously stated in interviews that he was “infatuated” with a Janet Jackson song as a newborn, which prompted his mother to enroll him in dance courses at the UK-based firm Nifty Feet.
A scout saw him while he was at a show, but they informed Holland he was too little to portray Billy Elliott in a theater production of “Billy Elliot: The Musical.” So he worked hard for two years, grew a little, and landed the part. Holland studied ballet as part of his training.
“I went to an all-boys school and played rugby, so ballet wasn’t the greatest thing to do,” he explained to “Spider-Man” co-star Zendaya in an interview for Interview magazine.
“I’d do it alone in the school gym at lunchtime, in tights, with a teacher,” Holland told GQ Style. “So you’ve got kids peering through the windows. Tom Holland dancing ballet in the gym isn’t cool to a bunch of 10-year-old rugby players.”
Regardless, Holland informed Zendaya that the hurtful remarks “toughened me up.”
“I’m quite glad I had that instruction,” he said. “It’s been quite beneficial to my work, and I’ve utilized it on nearly everything I’ve done since.”
