In the opening of her journal, the narrator praises the splendor of the home and grounds her husband has rented out for their summer vacation. She wonders how they managed to finance it and why the property had been vacant for so long, describing it romantically as an aristocratic estate or perhaps a haunted mansion. She talks about her illness—she has “nervous depression”—and her marriage because she senses that there is “something weird” about the circumstance. She laments that her doctor spouse John, who is also her husband, dismisses both her illness and her general thoughts and worries. She contrasts his sensible, logical approach with her own creative, compassionate approaches.
She is largely prohibited from engaging in physical activities during her therapy, including working and writing. She admits that she has started her covert notebook in order to “relieve her thoughts” and that she believes that exercise, independence, and exciting employment will benefit her condition. The narrator starts out by introducing the house in an effort to achieve this. Although the most of her depiction is favorable, unsettling details like the “rings and stuff” in the bedroom walls and the bars on the windows keep cropping up. The yellow wallpaper in the bedroom, which has an odd, amorphous design that particularly disturbs her, is described as “revolting.” However, soon John’s approach forces her to quit writing since his approach causes her to have her thoughts cut off. The Narrator

Although the narrator, whose name may or may not be Jane, has a “slight hysterical tendency,” her physicians feel she is extraordinarily imaginative and a good storyteller. She recounts her thoughts as her fixation with the wallpaper intensifies in a private diary that she keeps for herself.
John
Her doctor and her husband, the storyteller. As part of her therapy, John limits her behavior. John is very pragmatic, in contrast to his creative wife, and he “scoffs openly” at “fancy,” preferring facts and data. He appears to love his wife, but he is unaware of the harm his behavior does to her.
Jennie
sister of John The couple’s housekeeper is Jennie. The narrator’s emotions of guilt about her own failure to behave as a typical wife and mother are made more intense by her presence and her satisfaction with a domestic role. Jennie occasionally seems to have the impression that the storyteller is more distressed than she lets on.
