Characters:

Kino

the novella’s main character. Kino is a respectable, diligent, and poor local who works as a pearl diver. He is a modest man who loves his wife Juana and their young kid Coyotito very much and lives in a brush house with them. Following the discovery of a large pearl, Kino grows more ambitious and desperate in his quest to escape the oppression of his colonial culture. In the end, Kino’s materialistic goal reduces his existence to a simple struggle for survival, pushing him into a condition of animalistic aggression.

Juana

Younger Kino’s wife. Juana’s wishes for prosperity in the form of a massive pearl are granted, and she gradually starts to believe that the pearl is actually a tool of evil. Juana has a straightforward faith in supernatural forces, yet she also has independent thought. Unfortunately, she gives in to her husband’s domineering impulses and permits Kino to keep the pearl, which is bad for her and her child, Coyotito.

Coyotito

The sole child of Kino and Juana, who one morning while lying in a hammock is stung by a scorpion. As a baby, Coyotito is powerless to change his circumstances and is therefore dependent on people who look after him. The search for a large pearl that would allow Kino and Juana to hire a doctor to save him turns out to be more harmful than helpful.

Juan Tomás

Elder brother of Kino. Juan Tomás, who is fiercely devoted to his family, encourages Kino in all of his ambitions but cautions him about the risks associated with owning such a priceless gem. However, he is sympathetic to Kino and Juana, giving them a place to stay when they need to hide and keeping their whereabouts a secret.
