Editor’s Picks

Gene quickly starts to be envious of Finny’s incredible physical prowess, which is demonstrated by Finny breaking the school swimming record on his very first attempt. He believes that Finny, in turn, is envious of his better academic accomplishments, and he believes that Finny has been trying to take his mind off his studies. Gene carefully maintains an air of friendship even as his misgivings turn into angry loathing. This A Separate Peace quiz will help you remember certain details.

A Separate Peace quiz

When Finny one day displays a genuine desire to see Gene succeed, Gene realizes he has been gravely misled regarding the existence of any rivalry between them. He follows Finny to the tree for their customary jumping ritual while still reeling from the power of his discovery. Gene’s legs bend as Finny approaches the tree’s edge, shaking the branch and sending Finny plummeting to the ground, breaking his leg. Generally speaking, the catastrophe is viewed as an accident, and nobody—especially not Finny—thinks to blame Gene. But Gene experiences a sharp sense of shame when the doctor informs him that Finny’s sports days are finished. Prior to Gene having another opportunity to confess, Finny is sent home when the doctor interrupts him when he is about to disclose his involvement in Finny’s fall. Characters:

Gene Forrester

the book’s protagonist and narrator. Gene, who is in his early 30s and making his first trip back to the Devon School in years, is introduced in A Separate Peace. He is competitive, intellectual, and thoughtful with a propensity to brood. With his best buddy Finny, whom he alternately loves and envies, he forms a love-hate relationship. He frequently exhibits the desire to live as a part of Finny, a behavior that suggests he is profoundly uneasy with his own nature. Gene is a reticent and untrustworthy narrator when it comes to his own feelings, and the reader must infer this fact about Gene, like much of his character, from the events that he relates rather than from any explicit declarations about his thoughts.

Finny

Classmate and close friend of Gene. In short, Finny seems ideal in practically every way. He is sincere, appealing, self-assured, charming, and the finest athlete in the school. Although he frequently gets into trouble, he has a flair for enticing others with his spontaneity and pure enthusiasm of living. He can also negotiate his way out of practically any situation. Gene claims that he is unique among humans in that he never views anyone as an enemy and never seeks to subdue them. Finny appears to prefer sheer success than competition based on his actions. He has a fatal weakness in that he believes everyone is like him, that everyone has his positive outlook on life.

Leper Lepellier

one of Gene and Finny’s classmates. Leper is a quiet, kind youngster from Vermont who loves the outdoors and enjoys quiet pastimes like cross-country skiing. Though unpopular at Devon, he appears unconcerned about such things; it is only later in the book that it is suggested that he is envious of Finny’s status as Gene’s best friend and longs to be closer to Gene. The first student from Gene’s class to join the military, he finds military life to be too much and has hallucinations and a breakdown.
