A group of eight strangers are invited to Indian Island, which is off the coast of England. Former governess Vera Claythorne believes she has been recruited as a secretary; adventurers Philip Lombard and William Blore believe they have been hired to keep an eye out for problems during the weekend; and Dr. Armstrong believes he has been engaged to care for the wife of the island’s owner. Judge Wargrave, Tony Marston, Emily Brent, and General Macarthur believe they are going to see old acquaintances.

Editor’s Picks

The butler and housekeeper, Mr. and Mrs. Rogers, welcome the visitors to the island and inform them that the host, whom they refer to as Mr. Owen, won’t be there until the following day. After a fantastic meal that night, everyone congregates in the drawing room where they all overhear a recorded voice accusing each of them of a specific murder that was done in the past but was never discovered. They compare notes and discover that none of them, not even the servants, are familiar with “Mr. Owen,” which raises the possibility that they were brought here as part of a peculiar scheme. Tony Marston ingests contaminated whiskey and suffocates as they are debating what to do. The group retires to their beds out of fear, where practically everyone is tormented by guilt and flashbacks of their actions. Vera Claythorne recognizes the parallel between Marston’s passing and the opening line of the children’s poem “Ten Little Indians,” which is displayed in each bedroom. This And Then There Were None quiz will help you remember certain details.

Characters:

Judge Lawrence Wargrave

a judge who recently retired. Wargrave is an elderly guy with great intelligence and strength. Wargrave is an obvious choice to serve as the group’s leader as the characters start to suspect that a murderer is after them. He arranges searches, sets up the evidence, and makes sure the weapons are securely stored. The confession that reveals Wargrave’s guilt at the book’s conclusion reveals the traits—a strong sense of justice paired with a sadistic enjoyment of murder—that prompted him to commit the string of killings.

Vera Claythorne

a former governess who arrives on Indian Island with the intention of working as Mrs. Owen’s secretary. Vera is trying to get away from a past when she murdered Cyril Hamilton, a young child in her care, so that the man she loved would receive Cyril’s wealth. Vera’s lover left her even though the coroner exonerated her. Vera is one of the most capable and intelligent characters in the book, but she also experiences hysteric attacks, harbors remorse for her crime, and responds anxiously to the strange things happening on the island. The poem “Ten Little Indians” had a significant impact on her.

Philip Lombard

Unknown, self-assured, and resourceful man who appears to have served as a mercenary soldier in Africa. Compared to most of the other characters, Lombard is much braver and more clever, qualities that let him survive almost to the very end of the book. His chivalrous behavior toward women, especially Vera, with whom he had several intimate chats, is a flaw. He can’t see her as a potential killer, and he undervalues her cunning, which turns out to be a catastrophic error.
