“The Jewish Barber of Fleet Street” stars Chaplin, who is mistaken for a dictator. When it comes down to it, the actor performs the part well and ends with a speech that begs for peace and compassion.” Chaplin also portrayed a fascist dictator, styled after Hitler, in a dual role in this film.
After World War II ended, the United States and Nazi Germany had not yet officially entered into a peace treaty.
As early as 1938, the world’s most famous cinema star began working on a film about the 20th century’s most infamous horror movie villain. A toothbrush mustache on Hitler’s face made Charlie Chaplin look like Adolf Hitler. Chaplin took use of the likeness between the tyrant and a Jewish barber from the ghetto to create a satire.
Anti-Franco American volunteers in the Spanish Civil War were among Hitler’s first foes. An extended address at the end of “The Great Dictator” denounced dictatures and extolled democracy and individual liberties.
To some on the right, this sounded like a slap in the face to those on the left.
Groucho played the dictator Rufus T. Firefly in “Duck Soup,” released in 1933 by the Marx Brothers.
The Great Dictator quiz
Although Chaplin was not playing the Little Tramp in “The Great Dictator,” he looked just like him, albeit in a political satire instead of a humorous fable.

And his old neighbors have become close friends with him. Everyone now believes that the barber is the dictator.
World War I began with Germany’s invasion of Belgium and Luxembourg, followed by its conquest of northern France and its industrialization. Private Charlie Chaplin, a Jewish soldier fighting for Tomainia, one of the Quadruple Alliance’s members, saves the life of a severely injured pilot.
Even 20 years later, in 1938, the Private is still suffering from a near-total loss of memory. While trying to hide from the increasingly deadly regime, the barber falls in love with his neighbor (Paulette Goddard), and the two fall in love.
In order to expand his force, dictator Adenoid Hynkel (Charlie Chaplin) needs money. Although he hates Jews, he is willing to borrow money from one named Hermann Epstein. Epstein, on the other hand, will not lend him money. He escapes and goes into hiding with Barber in the ghetto.
About the quiz
Hannah, the Barber’s love interest, flees with her family to Osterlich, a neighboring nation. They are safe for the time being.
Chaplin began filming The Great Dictator in September 1939, just before World War II broke out. Michael Wood, a film reviewer, observes that the film premiered in London in December of that year, under German airstrikes.
Also, Chaplin’s portrayal of Adolf Hitler, at the height of his fame as the Little Tramp, came at an odd time for a comedy. With his short mustache and eerily compact face, Hitler’s image, the Little Tramp, was already a visual reference for cartoonists in the press.
The Nazi publication The Jews Are Looking At You from 1934 described him as “a nasty Jewish acrobat.” It is important to note that Chaplin was not Jewish. However, he was routinely rumored to be in the country at the time. A throng of German supporters mobbed him during his 1931 visit to Berlin. His fame had surpassed the ideological borders of a fledgling Nazi Germany, thus their hostility.
