Benjamin Braddock, who had graduated from college in the East, has just returned home to Southern California when the story begins. Unhappy, despite his intelligence and success. Think about it. It’s not something his parents’ friends at his graduation celebration want him to embrace, but he wants his future to be “different” in some way. Mrs. Robinson, the wife of Benjamin’s father’s business partner, is one of the visitors at this party, and she has other plans for Benjamin than to give him career advice. Benjamin agrees to drive Mrs. Robinson home, but he runs away when the come-ons become too overt, such as when Mrs. Robinson strips off and tries to lock Ben in the room with her. Ben resolves to call Mrs. Robinson later, following a series of dismal encounters that have left him feeling completely estranged from everyone. They begin their romance after meeting at a hotel. After he has told Mrs. Robinson to go to the bathroom, Mrs. Robinson continues to smoke and question Benjamin about his apparent disappointment, before requesting him to drive her home. Mr. Robinson, unaware of Benjamin’s intentions, wishes to set up his daughter Elaine with him. When Benjamin’s daughter arrives from Berkeley on Saturday, Mr. Robinson proposes that he phone her. Benjamin learns, however, that Elaine will be attending summer school in Berkeley.
