A ghost wanders the ramparts of Denmark’s Elsinore Castle during a gloomy winter night. The ghost resembles the recently murdered King Hamlet, whose brother Claudius has ascended to the kingdom and wed the king’s widow, Queen Gertrude. It was first spotted by a pair of watchmen, then by the scholar Horatio. The ghost speaks to Prince Hamlet when Horatio and the watchmen take the dead king’s son, Gertrude, to see it, ominously stating that it is definitely his father’s spirit and that Claudius was the one who killed him. The spirit vanishes with the dawn, having given Hamlet the order to exact revenge on the man who took his crown and wed his wife.
