Without a doubt, every person I’ve encountered who considers themselves to be a Gamer has an opinion on what it means to be a Gamer. Some interpret it reasonably as just a word that symbolizes someone who enjoys playing games, with the possibility of playing them on a regular basis. According to Dictionary.com, a Gamer is “someone who enjoys playing games, particularly computer or video games.” Doesn’t that make sense? According to this definition, it’s a really welcoming and easygoing group to be a part of. Tabletop Gamers can even get a seat at the “table” under this concept.
But, as words frequently do, the inquiry allows each person to apply every filter they’ve acquired on the subject to their response. When I asked the question “What is a Gamer?” on Twitter and among my own Gamer friends, I received a wide range of responses. Many submitted entire lists of conditions that represented their own style of gameplay as if they were members of some elite club with membership standards. Real Gamer Quiz
Some used the term “gamer” virtually as a derogatory term, listing only negative stereotypes. Among the responses I received were the following:
- Someone who likes to spend their leisure time playing video games.
- Someone who spends more time playing video games than watching television.
- Someone who hunts for and discovers all of the Easter eggs in the games they play.
- Someone who prefers hard-core shooter games to fantasy games.
- Someone who enjoys gaming and is technologically proficient yet makes little effort with personal hygiene or fashion. They also have rage difficulties.
- Someone who is obsessed with video games and spends all of their free time playing them. They are also antisocial in public, yet they are linked within the Gaming Community.
As a Female Gamer, I notice that many of these classifications exclude women from the “Gamer” title or “club membership” mentality. Why? Women frequently face real-life problems that prevent us from devoting the time and effort required to achieve the level of exclusivity afforded by these tight standards.
It’s difficult to game as a primary source of amusement when your children are watching Disney movies on TV or playing their own games on your gaming system. What about dancing recitals, soccer games, and school events? Many female gamers are in the process of having children.
About the quiz
Given that having children takes a significant amount of time, even with just one child, this may keep us out of the Gamer Club for most of our adult lives. Don’t even think of adding another job to your already-busy schedule. Easter eggs, on the other hand, take a long time to find and are quite elusive unless you are of the “youtube the spoilers” camp.
Women are more likely to be drawn to fantasy games than first-person shooter games. Despite their less hostile appearance, they are nevertheless challenging. They, like shooter games, need a tremendous level of dexterity and work to master the gameplay. However, I suppose killing things like a gorgeous elf or adorable gnome isn’t viewed seriously enough in some circles to earn Gamer status. Male Gamers frequently sexualize the characters we choose, forcing us Female Gamers into sexualized positions we didn’t seek out, or excluding us entirely from general Gamer status. And there’s no assurance that a female character will even be a female when you play a game.
Male gamers are sometimes quoted as saying that they “would rather look at a girl’s butt than a guy’s butt” or that female characters are smaller targets in games, so they use them to avoid being shot. Surprisingly, when given the option, a female gamer rarely chooses to play a male character. More often than not, we want to express an empowered version of ourselves.
