A manufacturing worker (played by Chaplin) has a nervous breakdown after trying to operate new equipment amid the Great Depression. A former prisoner is released, only to be misidentified as a communist activist. After stopping a jailbreak, he is arrested but released. Following this, he falls in love with Paulette Goddard, a young girl he encountered when she was fleeing the police after having stolen a loaf of bread. The film Modern Times, which opened to great acclaim in 1936, was Chaplin’s first appearance on a theatrical screen in five years.
