What exactly is a Patriot?
A patriot is someone who fiercely supports his country and believes that his country is superior to all other nations. Today, the term “patriot” can have negative implications if it suggests racist or aggressive nationalist sentiments. However, in the context of the American Revolutionary War, patriots were individuals who believed that the thirteen colonies needed to be free of Great Britain. Patriot ideas and aims were founded on a few fundamental principles:
“No taxation without representation:” patriots protested the fact that they had to pay taxes to Britain without being represented in the British parliament; anti-monarchic beliefs; and emphasis on civic virtues and rights
Among those clamoring for liberty and independence are several well-known names, including those of the “Founding Fathers.” Thomas Jefferson, who penned the Declaration of Independence and later became president, was a famous patriot, as were John Adams, George Washington (the first President of the United States), Benjamin Franklin, Paul Revere, Ethan Allen, and Samuel Adams. What exactly is a Loyalist?
Not everyone was dissatisfied with British rule and desired independence. However, faithful support for the British monarchy was not as great as the motherland thought. Even as the thirteen colonies cried out for independence and liberty, loyalists continued to express their support for the British Empire – albeit they had to be more circumspect once royal emissaries were banished from the country. Loyalists wanted to keep relations with the old continent for a variety of reasons, including:
They thought that economic contact with the United Kingdom benefited the colonies.
They considered taxation to be fair because Britain had fought the Indian and French wars to protect the colonies.
A unified British Empire, in their opinion, was strong and good; they believed that parliamentary representation of the colonies was physically impossible given the vast distance that separated Britain from America; and
They maintained that all Americans were British citizens and therefore be subject to British law.
Loyalists, also known as Royalists (monarchy supporters) and Tories (conservatives), had tiny bases in all thirteen provinces but fled to Canada and other British colonies once their cause was crushed. Famous loyalists include Benedict Arnold, Thomas Hutchinson, governor of Massachusetts, John Butler, who led loyalist troops known as Butler’s Rangers, Joseph Galloway, and David Mathews, Mayor of New York.

Patriots and loyalists are the two primary opposed factions that fought each other during the American Revolutionary War. Despite the fact that their beliefs and perspectives on Britain’s relationship with the thirteen colonies were radically different, there were a few commonalities between the two:
- They were both subject to the British Empire’s dominance.
- Most patriots and loyalists were descended from English settlers.
- They both belonged to the thirteen colonies and were subject to English law and rules; and
They were both willing to battle in order to promote and advance their values.
In other words, patriots and loyalists were the same people with opposing viewpoints, much as Democrats and Republicans exist now in America. The contrast between the several parties in the 18th century and the contemporary divide in the United States is the lengths to which patriots and loyalists were willing to go to promote their ideals. Indeed, given the very different conditions (including political, economic, and social balance), such a comparison is not totally true, but it demonstrates how patriots and loyalists were, in fact, part of the same people.
