The book King, Warrior, Magician, Lover is about masculine archetypes. Jung identified a problem many years ago: in the absence of a proper rite of passage from boyhood to manhood, many men will remain trapped in their boy psyche. This is frequently due to a lack of a father figure or examples of mature masculinity in their lives. In summary, boys do not mature into men.
The answer to feminists’ worries is greater masculine power, not less. The patriarchy is underdeveloped, infantile masculinity; it is the negative shadow of the good archetype. The book describes what undeveloped masculinity looks like in terms of the Shadow of four male archetypes (the King, the Warrior, the Magician, and the Lover) and what healthy masculinity looks like.

Tyrant: He is merely a destroyer. He does so because, as previously stated, he lacks inner structure. and he is fearful of his own concealed weakness and underlying lack of power.
He is extremely sensitive to criticism and, although putting on a frightening face, will feel weak and deflated at the smallest remark. He will not, however, show you this. Unless you know what to look for, what you will see is wrath. Behind the wrath, though, is a sense of worthlessness, fragility, and weakness.
The dictator despises, fears, and envies new life because he perceives it as a danger to his tenuous hold on the throne.
Weakness: The presence of this passive pole in the background explains the desire for mirroring – for “Adore me!” “Praise me!” “See how important I am!” says so many of our supervisors and friends. This explains their rage and attacks on individuals they perceive as weak, i.e. those onto whom they project their own inner Weakling.

Sadist: Though separation isn’t always a negative thing. As previously said, it does leave the door open for the “devil” of cruelty. Because he is so vulnerable in this area of similarity. The man under the spell of the Warrior need immediate control of his mind and feelings—not repression, but mastery. Otherwise, cruelty will sneak in through the back door while he isn’t looking.
We see this kind of sadism all too often in boot camp in the guise of ostensibly required “ritual humiliation” aimed to deprive recruits of their individuality and subjugate them to the power of a transpersonal commitment. Far too frequently, the drill sergeant’s motivations are those of a sadistic Warrior wishing to humiliate and violate the soldiers under his command.
Masochist: The masochist is the “pushover” and “whipped puppy” who lurks underneath the Sadist’s rageful outbursts. The Masochist puts Warrior energy onto others, causing a guy to feel helpless. The Masochist-possessed man is unable to protect himself psychologically; he lets others (and himself) push him around.
