Immortality refers to the indefinite continuation of a person’s existence after death. In everyday vernacular, immortality and the afterlife are nearly indistinguishable, but intellectually, they are not the same. The continuance of existence after death, whether indefinite or not, is referred to as the afterlife. Immortality indicates a never-ending existence, whether or not the body dies (as a matter of fact, some hypothetical medical technologies offer the prospect of bodily immortality, but not an afterlife).
Immortality has long been one of humanity’s key concerns, and while it has historically been associated with religious traditions, it is equally relevant to philosophy. Although many cultures believed in some form of immortality, such beliefs can be reduced to three non-exclusive models: (1) the survival of the astral body, which resembles the physical body; (2) the immortality of the immaterial soul (which is an incorporeal existence); and (3) resurrection of the body (or re-embodiment, in case the resurrected person does not keep the same body as at the moment of death). Dualists think that souls exist and that they survive the death of the body; materialists believe that mental activity is nothing more than brain activity and that death marks the end of a person’s existence. Because any account of immortality must address how the dead person might be identical to the original person who had lived, discussions on immortality are inextricably linked to discussions on personal identity. Philosophers have traditionally regarded three major requirements for personal identity: the soul criterion, the body criterion, and the psychological criterion.
