Going into this film, I had very low expectations because most of Disney’s recent films had been generic sequels to its cash-crop movies like “Frozen.” I was completely incorrect.
I was initially perplexed after my first viewing. It was a little difficult to follow. I found myself asking simple questions like, “What was the conflict?” or “Was anything resolved?” Normally, it’s not a good sign when your film, particularly a children’s film, leaves the viewer befuddled. It wasn’t until I rewatched the film that I realized how much of an animated masterpiece it is.
The story revolves around the Madrigals, a family who lives in a magical village in a remote part of Colombia. The magic was created after Abuela, the family’s matriarch, lost her husband while fleeing their home when her children were infants. Her family and the villagers were shielded from the outside world by a spell known as the “Encanto,” which takes the form of an everlasting candle. It also builds a sentient house called “Casita” for the Madrigals to live in. In a special ceremony, each biological member of the family received a unique power from the Encanto. All of them, with the exception of the film’s protagonist, Mirabel. She adores her family, but she can’t help but feel insecure in comparison to the rest of her family’s abilities.

Antonio’s ceremony is successful because he receives his gift without incident. The family is overjoyed, and Mirabel’s attempts to deny it only serve to make her feel worse and less valuable to the family. While alone in her house, she notices cracks in the walls and the magic itself. She warns Abuela and the rest of the family, but by the time they arrive to inspect the cracks, they have vanished. Abuela doesn’t seem to believe her, and Mirabel becomes even more isolated.
About the quiz

She discovers that when the cracks were discovered, her super-strong older sister, Louisa, was struggling to lift things. Louisa reveals that their estranged fortune-teller uncle, Bruno, had a vision about it before vanishing years before.
Mirabel infiltrates Bruno’s now-vacant room and discovers the vision he had, in which she is seen at the center of the Encanto’s cracks. Abuela finds her but is oblivious to what she is up to as Louisa’s problems worsen. Abuela is currently attempting to arrange a marriage between a local man and Mirabel’s other sister, Isabella, with whom she has a strained relationship. Isabella appears to be flawless, as she grows hundreds of flowers for those around her.
The rest of the family and the village then warn Mirabel about Bruno and his visions frequently causing misery and chaos for those involved. She is unable to fully comprehend the vision before the entire family is summoned to Abuela’s engagement dinner for Isabella.
