What do you mean we don’t discuss Bruno? It seems like everyone is doing it these days. Encanto, Disney’s hit animated musical, was released in theaters in November and is now available on Disney Plus. The coronavirus pandemic may have limited Encanto’s time in theaters, but it can be watched over and over again on Disney Plus. And with songs like We Don’t Talk About Bruno and Surface Pressure by Lin-Manuel Miranda, it’s easy to do just that.
If you spend an inordinate amount of time in the world of Encanto, here are 13 fun facts about the magical Madrigal family that you might not know.
What is the meaning of the title Encanto?
You can translate “Encanto” from Spanish to mean “charm,” but you can also think of it as “allure” or “enchantment.” Not only is Encanto’s casita enchanted with magic, but the entire Madrigal family carries that allure and sheer joy with them.
Many Bruno memes were inspired by Lin-Manuel Miranda. Also, you must try to play this Encanto Trivia Quiz.

Bruno, the Madrigal member whom the family does not discuss, is played by actor John Leguizamo (except that they totally do). The Madrigals are a Colombian family, and Leguizamo was born in Bogotá, Colombia, so the casting appears to be spot on. Many fans, however, saw similarities between Bruno and songwriter Lin-Manuel Miranda, both in appearance and the significance of his role. While Miranda has not publicly stated that he has considered playing the role himself, the possibility of him doing so has sparked a slew of memes.
“I just saw a TikTok of a guy saying Bruno Madrigal looks like Lin-Manuel Miranda if Hamilton never made it to Broadway,” one fan tweeted.
“How many people do you think it took to keep Lin from voicing Bruno?” asked another.
Bruno can be found in the movie poster.
Examine the poster for Encanto, which is crammed with the Madrigal family. Isn’t that Bruno, the mysterious Madrigal the family prefers not to discuss, hiding under his green cloak in the far left corner of the poster, next to a tree trunk?
The opening song was inspired by the film Beauty and the Beast.
Remember the opening song from 1991’s Beauty and the Beast, in which Belle whirls through her village singing about the people she knows? Miranda’s opening number in Encanto, The Family Madrigal, was inspired by this concept, in which Mirabel introduces her magical relatives and their powers.
About the quiz
“For our opening number, I was really inspired by Beauty and the Beast, Belle,” Miranda told the Los Angeles Times. “We wanted to capture the complexities of a family on film. And that means wrapping our arms around them and not letting them get lost in the story process, where the main character and their quest tend to take center stage. We must be extremely clear about who it is, how they are related, what they can do, and how this relates to our main character.”
Mirabel’s skirt honors her family members.
Clothing is important in Encanto. Mirabel’s family members all wear a symbol indicating their gift somewhere on their clothing. (Note the barbells on super-strong Luisa’s skirt, or Pepa’s sunshine earrings, which are appropriate given that her emotions control the weather.) Mirabel, on the other hand, who begins the film with no gifts, has them all embroidered on her skirt, including a candle for Abuela, a chameleon for shape-shifting Camilo, animals for Antonio, and more.
“My favorite detail about Encanto is that every character, except Mirabel, has a symbol of their miracle embroidered on their clothes,” one fan writes in a tweet.
