Characters:

Count Dracula

Count Dracula is a Transylvanian aristocrat and a centuries-old vampire who lives in the Carpathian Mountains in a dilapidated castle. The count hides a wicked and vicious spirit beneath a façade of aristocratic grace. He is stronger than twenty men, has the ability to change into an animal, and has influence over the weather. His abilities are constrained, though; for example, he cannot enter a victim’s home unless asked, he must be transported across water, and daylight renders him helpless.

Van Helsing

Van Helsing is a Dutch professor who was called upon to treat the sick Lucy Westenra and is hailed by his former student Dr. Seward as “a philosopher and metaphysician, and one of the most sophisticated scientists of his day.” Van Helsing, in contrast to his allies, is not deceived by the limitations of Western medicine since he is aware that the force he is up against cannot be defeated by conventional science and reason. Van Helsing, who is knowledgeable about vampire mythology, turns as Dracula’s main foe and the captain of the squad that tracks down and kills him.

Jonathan Harker

A solicitor or attorney whose firm sends him to Transylvania to complete a property deal with Dracula Harker, a young and naive man, is rapidly imprisoned in the castle and only just manages to escape. He exhibits a tremendous desire to find out who his kidnapper really is and a fierce want to get away. Later, when Harker has come to believe that the count has relocated to London, he shows himself to be a courageous and daring warrior.

Mina Murray

wife of Jonathan Harker. Mina, a young woman who works as a schoolmistress, is realistic. Mina is the closest friend of Lucy Westenra, who becomes the count’s first victim in the book and is ultimately harmed by her. As the embodiment of innocence, purity, and Christian faith—virtues she upholds despite suffering at the hands of the vampire—Mina is in many ways the protagonist of the book. She is clever and resourceful, and thanks to her investigation, Van Helsing’s soldiers find Castle Dracula.
