When Jake Gittes, a former cop, and divorce investigator, meets a lady pretending to be Hollis Mulwray’s wife, he becomes suspicious. It’s been rumored that others have spotted Hollis with another lady, so she gets Jake to investigate.
At a public hearing for the proposed dam and reservoir, Jake listens to testimony. A drought has hit the city, but Hollis still opposes the proposal. The audience erupts in fury. Hollis is accused of being paid to steal water by a man who believes he has been bribed. As Hollis explores the city’s water supply, Jake follows along. After Hollis embraces a blonde woman, Jake captures images of her that he provides to his customer. The next day, without Jake’s knowledge, the newspaper publishes the images.
Jake’s office is visited by the real Evelyn Mulwray, who threatens to sue him for damaging her husband’s reputation. Rudy Yelburton and Claude Mulvihill remove Jake out of Hollis’ office as he tries to find him there. As a result of Jake’s efforts, Evelyn Mulwray agrees to abandon her lawsuit against him and her husband as soon as he arrives at the Mulwray home. Evelyn proposes that Jake looks for Hollis at Oak Pass Reservoir when he asks to speak with him. The cops have already located Hollis’s drowned body in the reservoir before Jake even gets to it.

A short time later, he discovers, however, that Evelyn appears to be holding Hollis’ kissing partner captive. Evelyn, he believes, is holding Hollis’ killer hostage in order to prevent her from revealing her identity.
About the quiz
Water and Power Engineer Hollis Mulwray works for the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power in California. Gittes learns from Mr. Mulwray that he is opposed to the proposed construction of a new water supply reservoir, and he shoots some images of him meeting with an attractive young woman as he is following him. Some of the images appeared on the first page of the newspaper the next day. In his office, Jake meets Mrs. Evelyn Mulwray. Mrs. Mulwray was a ruse to set Hollis up, and Gittes has now learned that she is his genuine wife.
Jake deduces quickly that Hollis Mulwray was not the intended target, but rather his wife.
When he finally makes it to safety, Water Department Security Chief Claude Mulvihill confronts him with trespassing charges. To warn Jake to keep his nose out of inappropriate places, Mulvihill’s small henchman stabs one of his nostrils with a dagger. However, she recommends Jake check the newspaper obituaries.
Jakes decides to pay a visit to Hollis Mulwray after learning that he was a business associate of Evelyn’s wealthy father, Noah. There’s one more piece of advice Noah has for Jake and his nose: he understands just how powerful the individuals he’s tampering with really are. For identifying Hollis Mulwray’s mistress, he offers Jake double his usual compensation.
