If you decide to watch Anonymously Yours (I promise I won’t judge), it’s about two high schoolers who form a digital bond. The twist is that they have no idea they are chatting to someone who irritates them in real life (IRL). The two main characters, Alex (Ralf) and Vale (Annie Cabello), each have their own problems, which are exacerbated as they try to negotiate high school and the end-of-year prom. To assist them to work through their problems, they form a friendship with an “anonymous” contact, which quickly turns into love affections.
Anonymously Yours is about a high school relationship, so you can probably imagine how the story will proceed. However, the manner in which it arrives at the conclusion is simply ridiculous. How long can someone continue without realizing that the person they’re messaging is standing right next to them? Anonymously Yours fumbles the most, and it’s difficult to care about the characters when it’s so evident how the film will end. Despite having all of the typical teenage film formulas, such as misunderstood teenagers, a prom, and unusual friendships/romances, Anonymously Yours fails to translate them into a compelling film. What could work in Anonymously Yours’ advantage is the apparent appeal to a youthful readership. A younger audience may be more forgiving of the problems in this film and hence perceive it more favorably. Above all, don’t do what Vale and Alex did and talk to random individuals online, is the best advice I could provide to those who watch Anonymously Yours. Aside from that, try to ignore the film’s ridiculous bits and enjoy it. If you’re able.
Alex and Vale decide to meet their anonymous phone dates after exchanging messages. With Alex and Vale developing genuine affections for one another, their remorse toward their respective phone companions grows. So they decide to meet in person.
Alex leaves home and arrives at the diner on the day of the meeting. Both are vibrating with nervous energy after informing each other what they’re wearing (a red beret for her and a hole in his sweater).
About the quiz
When Alex arrives, he discovers Vale waiting for him. When he sees her red beret, he immediately suspects she’s been playing a joke on him all along. The moral of the story is to always speak properly… and also to never message arbitrary digits without receiving a picture in return. We’re all aware of the perils of catfishing, and this video accidentally becomes a cautionary tale about seeing what’s right in front of you – rather than what’s right in front of a phone screen.
