Seirin High School is now home to the mysterious athlete. The school’s little-known, yet powerful squad is a new one for him. In the beginning, everyone is startled by Kuroko’s small size, invisibility, and overall “poor” performance on the basketball court. American-born Taiga Kagami joins the Seirin basketball squad as a natural talent. Is there a reason he is so strong? Special? In what way would he be of use to his high school team? Besides his lack of dribbling and shooting skills, Kuroko’s lack of presence on the court is so bad that other players forget he’s there!
But Kagami soon learns that Kuroko takes advantage of Kagami’s inability to play well. In particular, he excels at passing the ball to stronger players who are capable of scoring goals. The entire summer, ironically, they ran across Shutoku while practicing.
They faced team Shutoku once more in the preliminary. The result of this match was a stalemate, hence Seirin had to defeat team Kirisaki Daichi to qualify for the next round. The captain of the Kirisaki Daichi team was the Uncrowned Kings member Makoto Hanamiya, who is known for his unsportsmanlike tactics in order to win a game. They won, but they lost a chance to go to the Winter Cup.
