Three embedded narratives are included in The Blind Assassin. Iris Chase Griffen contemplates her life and family history while composing a manuscript between the spring of 1998 and May of 1999. Iris, who is in her eighties, resides in Port Ticonderoga, a small hamlet in Ontario. Her sister Laura, her husband Richard, and her daughter Aimee have all passed away, leaving her without any living relatives. Sabrina is Iris’ granddaughter, although the two of them do not get along well. Iris is still independent, but she needs Myra, a nearby shop owner, for assistance. Because her own mother, Reenie, worked for the Chase family and looked after Iris and Laura when they were young, Myra feels a strong bond with Iris. Iris’s current experiences as an elderly woman and her recollections of her early life are alternated throughout the story.
The story of Iris is intermingled with passages from the 1947 book The Blind Assassin. Many people think that Iris’s younger sister Laura’s death in an automobile accident in 1945 was a suicide. After Laura’s passing, her unfinished novel The Blind Assassin was discovered, and it was later released. A sequence of interactions between a man and a woman who are having an affair are described in Laura’s book. It ultimately becomes apparent that the woman is well-off and the male is a runaway. When they first meet, the man begins to tell the woman a continuing tale about the far-off planet Zycron. Husband of Iris. Rich and cunning, Richard is a businessman who will do anything to increase his fortune and power. He treats Iris cruelly and coldly, and he’ll use blackmail to force Laura to have sex with him. Richard is very concerned with his reputation and public persona because he thinks that keeping a good public persona would help him achieve the political power he seeks.
Winifred Griffen Prior
Iris’s sister-in-law and Richard’s sister. Winifred is a cold and ruthless woman who only cares about retaining her brother’s power, fortune, and prestige. She is willing to assist her brother in covering up his violent behavior because she doesn’t care about Laura or Iris’ welfare.
