Characters:

Holden Caulfield

Holden, the book’s main character and narrator, is a junior at the age of sixteen who has recently been ejected from Pencey Prep for academic failure. Although he is intelligent and sympathetic, Holden speaks in a sarcastic and jaded style. He attempts to shield himself from the hurt and disappointment of the adult world by being cynical since he finds the duplicity and ugly nature of the world around him virtually intolerable. However, Holden also criticizes himself in relation to those around him. He occasionally exhibits as much phoniness, meanness, and superficiality as anyone else in the novel because he is uncomfortable with his own flaws. Holden is depicted as being balanced on the cliff that separates infancy and adulthood as the book begins. He is on the edge of emotional breakdown due to his inability to bridge the chasm.

Ackley

The person who lives next door to Holden in his Pencey Prep dorm. Ackley is a boy with acne, insecurity, and poor oral hygiene. He frequently storms into Holden’s room and is totally unconcerned about Holden’s cues to leave. Holden thinks Ackley fabricates intricate lies about his sex life.

Stradlater

Pencey Prep roommate of Holden. Holden refers to Stradlater as a “hidden slob” because while being well-groomed, his amenities, including his razor, are abhorrently dirty. Stradlater is attractive, smug, and popular. Holden also refers to Stradlater as a “sexy bastard” since he engages in sexual activity and has much experience for a prep school kid.

Jane Gallagher

a girl Holden spent a lot of time with one summer when their family were vacationing in nearby Maine summer homes. Jane is one of the few women Holden respects and considers attractive, despite the fact that she never makes an appearance in The Catcher in the Rye.
