On the Tex-Mex border, it’s 1980. During the Vietnam War, an Army veteran uncovers a sack of narcotics money. When an arrested man kills a deputy, he escapes with his life. There is also an old sheriff who sits around talking about how old he is. Only old men should do this. If so, there’s a way out there. Silver foxes may be allowed. Please contact us if you have any questions.

He’s Llewelyn Moss, a Vietnam War veteran. Human bodies and abandoned vehicles strike his eye as he hunts for antelope in the desert. Everyone who was involved in the drug deal died, leaving behind the narcotics and the money—$2.4 million, to be exact—as a result of the mistake. Such a sum would be enough to buy a lot of shoulder armor.

In the 1980s, Llewelyn takes the money and discovers a drug runner who has been wounded but has not yet expired. Llewelyn is unable to provide water to the man.

Editor’s Picks

After giving the money to Carla Jean, Llewelyn returns to the crime scene with a jug of water later that night. How kind you are.

This is a mistake. He was killed by drug runners, but they’re still lurking around the region. It’s a gunfight, and Llewelyn flees, abandoning his truck and taking off running. So, he instructs his wife to stay with her mother and makes a dash for it.

No Country for Old Men quiz

Suppose someone took $2.4 million of your money. What would be your reaction? That’s not what I thought.

His own handcuff chain kills the deputy, and he escapes. Chigurh is a drug runner who works for a certain group. It’s true, in a sense.

While pursuing Llewelyn through a number of no-tell motels, Chigurh engages in a few shootouts. On his trip to Mexico, Llewelyn hides the money in a riverbank while Chigurh takes refuge in an abandoned motel room to bandage himself and heal. A bleak West Texas landscape near the U.S./Mexico border is depicted in No Country for Old Men, which takes place in 1980. Sheriff Ed Tom Bell, a WWII veteran and sheriff of Terrell County, delivers a monologue in which he discusses the evolution of evil in America and his struggle to accept the changes he is watching in society in the novel’s opening. Each one that follows establishes a theme in the story.

Llewellyn Moss, a Vietnam veteran, opens the story. In the middle of the night, Moss comes across a cocaine deal gone horribly wrong while out looking for antelope. He finds a dying Mexican man in a vehicle loaded with heroin.

Carla Jean is told by Moss to travel to Odessa and remain with her mother when she returns home. Moss is on the run after she travels for Odessa.

About the quiz

Heriff Bell and his deputies continue their investigation into the botched drug sale and a series of deaths that seem to be connected.

During his hospital stay, Carson Wells approaches Moss and offers to protect him for a fee. The offer is rejected by Moss, but Wells offers to call Moss back as soon as Moss feels he can no longer handle Chigurh on his own. In a matter of minutes after Chigurh has recovered from his injuries, he follows down Wells and murders him. The phone rings and Chigurh informs Moss that if he doesn’t hand over the money, he’ll kill Carla Jean.

Carla Jean debates whether or not to tell Sheriff Bell, but eventually does, and some of the hunters seeking Moss are able to track down the call.

Sheriff Bell finds a bloodbath at the motel when he arrives there. Prior to his arrival, a group of Mexicans has slain Moss. He returns it to Moss in the motel later that night. Unfinished business requires his presence later that day at the home of Carla Jean.

In the end, Chigurh lives and, after bribing two adolescents to forget about him, makes a clean getaway by limping down the road. Authorities have never been able to locate him.

Bell relents and departs after a long, but fruitless inquiry, leaving the case feeling defeated and dejected. In the days that followed, Bell had two dreams: one in which he asked his father for money, and the other in which he and his friends were riding horses across snowy mountains. Bell’s father goes ahead in the second dream, carrying a white horn filled with flames.
