Akatsuki no Yona (Yona of the Dawn), written and illustrated by Kusanagi Mizuho, is a manga series. Following the story of a 16-year-old red-haired girl named Yona, it shows everything she encounters on her journey.
Long ago, a red dragon arrived from the heavens and took up residence in the Kingdom of Kouka. He became a human, known as Hiryuu, and governed the kingdom until he was conquered by an army from the sky. The four Warriors-turned-dragons flanking him symbolize the prosperity of his realm, having derived assistance from the Gods of old who helped him bring the kingdom to where it is today. As time went on, the story developed into a fable told to youngsters.
However, three thousand years later, the kingdom still had no male successors and the only princess in residence was a woman named Yona who lived in luxury. She fell in love with her cousin, Soo-Won, and was shielded from the harsh realities of the outer world by her bodyguard, Son Hak. There was an internal political revolution in the kingdom under Kouka’s reign. Yona had fled with just Hak by her side after Suwon mounted a brutal coup and murdered her father.

She discovers that an exiled priest in the western woods offers her hope. The only chance she has to succeed is to locate the four legendary dragon fighters. The “fictitious myth” says that Yona is on a quest to find the soldiers who must fight for the throne and restore the kingdom. Doesn’t it sound promising? After seeing 12 Kingdoms, this anime is probably the closest I’ve seen thus far in terms of story, with a dash of Moribito. In addition to Fushigi Yuugi, I’ve heard that the show has a similar “going to catch all those attractive guys” theme.
Yona is also a compelling lead. Chiwa Saito does a great job portraying the Princess as sheltered, spoilt, but not awful. In part because of King Il’s overprotective parenting, she lives in a bubble. And it’s only until Soo-sword Won pierces her father that her character can begin to take shape. A crown-worthy moment is when she realizes just how bad things are in her realm and decides what to do with her supporters.
About the quiz
The only person who can keep her company at first is Hak. “Thunder Beast” is another name for him, and it’s not without cause; he’s basically a one-man army. It only takes one stroke of his massive halberd to wipe out a large number of people. Yona decides to search down the legendary dragons once she has regained her bearings and asks Hak for help.
Chapters 135 to 140 of volume 24 make up this volume. Yona and Hak ask Ogi, an informant, to convey a vital document to Su-won in order to avoid conflict with the Xing country. Kang Tae-jun is Yona’s ally, and he expects to obtain some support from him to prevent the approaching battle.
This manga’s artwork is top-notch. When it comes to backdrops, Kusanagi has a keen eye for detail. Especially appealing to me were the panels that depicted castles and palace courtyards. Kusanagi’s pictures of the palace settings are rich in detail and appear to be the work of an architect in their quality and accuracy. They’re that good.
Also, her use of shading fascinates me. Examples include the employment of shade to emphasize illumination in a room and to portray characters’ moods and personality traits. In addition, her use of shading enhances the quality of the manga as a whole.
