The National Football League (NFL) is a significant professional gridiron football organization based in Canton, Ohio, that was created in 1920 as the American Professional Football Association. Jim Thorpe, an accomplished American athlete who also played in the league, was the league’s first president. The current name was chosen in 1922.

The league began to play in 1920 with five Ohio teams (Akron Pros, Canton Bulldogs, Cleveland Tigers, Columbus Panhandlers, and Dayton Triangles), four Illinois teams (Chicago Tigers, Decatur Staleys, Racine Cardinals [the Cardinals were based in Chicago but took the name of a local street], and Rock Island Independents), two Indiana teams (Hammond Pros and Muncie Flyers), two New York teams (Buffalo All-Americans Only two of these original franchises remain: the Cardinals, who migrated to Arizona in 1988 after leaving Chicago for St. Louis after the 1959 season; and the Decatur Staleys, who moved to Chicago in 1921 and changed their name to the Bears a year later.
The NFL overcame many years of insecurity and rivalry to become the most powerful American professional football league. The American Football League (AFL) posed the most significant challenge to its dominance in the 1960s. The NFL and AFL merged in 1970, resulting in a 26-team circuit known as the older NFL. Since then, the league has grown four times, adding six new franchises each time.

From 2001 to 2016, the Patriots had the finest 16-year span in league history, with an average season-ending Elo rating of 1701. From 1981 to 1998, the Elo average in San Francisco was 1683. The 49ers made the playoffs 16 times, won more than 10 games 17 times, and won five championships over these 18 seasons. The Patriots may have had the greatest peak Elo rating of all time — 1849 following their 18-0 start to the 2007 season — but if you were born in 1981, the 49ers were among the best in the NFL for your entire childhood. Tom Brady and Bill Belichick aren’t quite there yet.

The Cowboys traded Pro Bowl running back Herschel Walker to the Minnesota Vikings in return for a slew of players and draft picks, which resulted in the selections of running back Emmitt Smith, safety Darren Woodson, and defensive tackle Russell Maryland. Walker never had more than 200 carries or 1,000 yards in any of his two full seasons with the Vikings. It was one of the most one-sided transactions in NFL history.
The reward was not immediate. The Cowboys concluded the 1989 season 1-15, with an Elo rating of 1271. They’d make the playoffs two years later and win the Super Bowl the following year, their first of three championships in the 1990s. After that title game in January 1993, the Cowboys’ Elo rating was 1784, a gain of almost 500 points in just three years.
Green Bay Has Been Excellent For A Very Long Time.
Green Bay controlled the NFL before anyone cared about it. The Packers have won 13 championships, the most of any franchise. However, nine of those occurred before to the Super Bowl era, and two more occurred prior to the AFL-NFL merger in 1970. The team’s very existence is a living reminder of the NFL’s longevity: if pro football had developed in the 1960s rather than the 1920s, Green Bay, Wisconsin, would almost certainly not have obtained a franchise.
