Puss Gets the Boot (1940), Tom (the conniving cat), and Jerry (the sprightly mouse) were not named yet at their debut theater short but they nevertheless played a big role. For Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, animators William Hanna and Joseph Barbera produced over 100 episodes (MGM). Several of the awarded Academy Awards for Best animated Shortsubject, include Yankee Doodle Mouse (1943), The Cat Concerto (1946), and Johann Mouse (1952). Hanna and Barbera’s own studio gained rights in produces new, specially small-screen episodes for Tom and Jerry, with 48 stories produced from 1975 to 1977. The show remained standard for decades, though racial or other unpleasant parts were frequently modified from the early segments.
