Charlie admits that he needs someone to talk to by writing a letter with an anonymous “Friend.” At the end of the last school year, Charlie felt lonely and frightened that his best buddy Michael had committed suicide. Thinking about the causes behind the suicide Michael, Charlie wondered whether Michael had “home difficulties,” and then wondered if he had home problems too. Then Charlie discusses his family and reveals his Aunt Helen was his favorite person, and before she died, she went to live with his family.
Charlie wrestles with a bully in the first couple of weeks of school. He explains that his brother taught him how to struggle so he hurt the bully badly and then began to cry. He’s pretty emotional, he confesses. He is isolated at school, but Charlie’s teacher encourages Charlie to call him “Bill” one day in his Advanced English classes outside of class, praises his literary skills, and provides him extra books to read. The sister of Charlie is a senior at his school, and he is bad for the boys that admire her, arguing that it is meaningful for her. His sister has mixed tapes, especially from a young lad, but Charlie delivers them and likes music. She beats her one night before Charlie when Charlie’s sister criticizes the boyfriend for not sticking up for himself. She still sees this kid and promises Charlie that she won’t tell anybody about the mistreatment. Charlie ends up telling Bill during the class the next week about the boyfriend of Charlie’s sister beating her.
