Norman Bridwell originally going to name an oxymoron to his large red dog: Tiny! However, his wife, Norma, informed him that the name was too “boring” and proposed naming the person after an imaginary buddy of his youth, Clifford.
Norman was shown as a big bloodhound when he first drew Clifford. Over time, though, he grew bigger and larger, and more of an “all-around dog,” as Norman called him. Why is his iconic color, Clifford? It was red because I only had red paint on the drafting table that night, Norman recounted. It was red.
The whole life Norman loved to draw. After studying in Indianapolis, Indiana, at the John Herron Art Institute and completing extra seminars at the Cooper Union in New York, Norman set up a portfolio and entered the children’s book illustrating market. But his entries are repeatedly rejected and his work is too “average,” as critics tell him.
Lastly, a buddy from a child book writer advised that Norman attempt to create his own stories with his illustrations of a small girl who rode like a horse a big dog. And thus the Big Red Dog came into being! And so it was!

Richard Robinson, President, and CEO of Scholastic gave a warm message in 2014 after Norman Bridwell passed away at the age of 86 why he thinks it so important for so many readers in the world. Her father established a literary icon at that moment, she realized! Clifford is perhaps the world’s most known big red dog, whether you know him from his novels, television series, movies, or video games.
His dog pictures were too commonplace and dull. One critical finally proposed that Bridwell make a small story to put on a pony-like paddy with his pictures, and it all took.
