Once released, he meets Radiator Springs’ population led by Doc Hudson (Paul Newman), who could be an old-time man, yet probably knows something about Hudson, which Lightning does not: they have a lower center of gravity than their time’s Big 3 cars and won car races with more tight turns because of their “Step-Down Design.”

The message in “Cars” is simplicity itself: life was better in the past when it was revolving around tiny cities, with all the others, and around small roads like Route 66, with friends, sometimes between Winona and Flagstaff. He would have never gone out of his brilliant Normal World if he had had his way, and his first plot point response is to make up a scheme to bring his bumper back to Normal as quickly as possible. But all the rules are different on this new planet. The deeper and deeper difficulty in Radiator Springs is the lies he has been richly rewarded for.
