Joss Whedon, 22 years ago, wrote a forgivingly terrible yet unmistakably amusing horror picture called Buppy the Vampire Slayer, which sought to disrupt the conventional active male/passive female dichotomy of his genre. Unfortunately, his subversive approach to the common monster hunter in trouble tropical areas was perhaps too advanced for the industry managers to fund the project and Whedon had unfortunately scratched his initial concept. What was meant to be a serious portrayal of female empowerment, became a full comedy catastrophe?
Although the film hardly won a tenth of the TV spin-off popularity. It still caused a popular sensation, was a valid topic for serious academic studies, and produced an industry of romance, apparel, publications, statues and books, and so on. In 2003, after a 7-season show, the TV show stopped, but the Dark Horses Comics tale continues to survive. Season 8 starts in 2007 and Season 9 in 2011.
