Following the death of Meiko “Menma” Honma, a group of six childhood friends – Chiriko “Tsuruko” Tsurumi, Yukiatsu “Yukiatsu” Matsuyuki, Naruko “Anaru” Anjou, Tesud “Poppo” Hisakawa, and Jinta Yadomi – drift away. It has been ten years since Jinta Yadomi became reclusive and isolated from society. An older-looking Menma appears before him one summer day and wants to have a desire granted, reasoning that she cannot pass on to the hereafter until it is granted. Jinta believes that his estranged friends are the key to fixing this dilemma because Menma has forgotten what her wish is. Hidden feelings, personal tensions, and bitterness from Menma’s parents complicate the group’s efforts to assist both Menma and themselves move on.
