The promise of a better life is alluring and all-consuming, and it thrives in areas with extreme economic imbalance. “7 Prisoners,” situated in Brazil, depicts the limitations and laments of such fantasizing. There are power hierarchies that control economies and labor forces, and exploitation is built into such hierarchies to keep power at the top. Survival is easier said than done, and “7 Prisoners” is a tense thriller that explores the frailty of the human psyche.

Editor’s Picks

Mateus (Christian Malheiros), 18, lives in the Brazilian countryside with his mother and sisters in filmmaker Alexandre Moratto’s familiar but nevertheless intriguing drama. He adores them, and they adore him. His mother works nonstop to support them, and the expense of living—groceries, electricity, phone cards—is exorbitant. So when a recruiter named Gilson (Mauricio de Barros) offers Mateus and three other young men from his hamlet the chance to come to So Paolo, they jump at the chance. Catanduva was lovely, but Mateus, Samuel (Bruno Rocha), Isaque (Lucas Oranmian), and Ezequiel (Vitor Julian) don’t want to spend the rest of their lives working in the fields. They leave behind wives, mothers, sisters, and another family to board Gilson’s van and travel into the city, and Moratto portrays the separation between there and here from the start. The countryside is peaceful but deserted, whereas So Paolo’s skyline, with its unending towers and massive glass spears, is glittering but unwelcoming, with sharp edges and artificial textures. It’s a good visual introduction to the junkyard where Gilson dumps the four young men, which appears to be a prison. Mateus and his friends will be sleeping in dilapidated bunk beds. The tops of the junkyard walls are covered in barbed wire. And its massive metal gate clanks down with violent finality, an alarming sound that indicates the contract the young men expected isn’t quite so generous.

Rodrigo Santoro is virtually unrecognizable as Luca, the man who oversees the junkyard and makes the men’s lives miserable. The heartthrob from “Westworld,” the dashing Castro from the “Che” movie, the despised Paulo from “Lost,” and the monster Xerxes from the “300” comic novel adaptations are all gone. He’s shaggy-bearded, lanky, fast with a slap, and casual with a rifle. Luca reminds the young men that they owe him for their journey, for their advance payments, for the awful gruel they eat three times a day, for the rotten mattresses they sleep on, and for the gloves they must wear when touching scrap metal, copper, and rubber in the junkyard. “You’re lucky I keep track of everything,” Luca replies, implying that the men must pay it all off.

About the quiz

Why aren’t they leaving? They make an attempt. Why don’t they make a fuss? They certainly do. “7 Prisoners” is produced by Fernando Meirelles of “The City of God” and Ramin Bahrani of “The White Tiger,” and both filmmakers have told similar stories of top-down exploitation and the impossible weight placed on the person at the bottom of that ladder in their previous films. Moratto’s work is very much in dialogue with those predecessors, both in terms of the general plot and the protagonists Mateus and Luca. As the two men cautiously circle each other, their hostility transforms into grudging respect and inadvertent loyalty. Are they really so dissimilar?

Moratto and Thayná Mantesso’s writing intentionally makes us uncomfortable with its replies. As “7 Prisoners” follows the chain of command, we meet more exploited workers, vicious enforcers, nouveau riche bosses, and those on the web who profit from cruelty and corruption. Germano de Oliveira, the film’s editor, keeps the film moving as we travel around Brazil, understand the quid pro quo business links that cross national boundaries, and inch out beside Luca on the dirty precipices on which he operates.
