Summer in the Dark

The risk level with these mutants is insane, even in zombie fiction. Consider Romero’s rule that “everyone who dies (without being shot in the head) becomes another zombie,” mixed with World War Z’s insanely high infection rate.

Then, for good measure, make the process even faster and more successful (almost as if death itself is now the infection rather than any sickness, radiation, or other conventional zombification sources)! Add in the popular speed and agility of the monsters from 28 Days Later or Dawn of the Dead’s remake, and your outbreak has a tremendously frustrating advantage over the living.

Editor’s Picks

The Dying Light saga

Enough said about volatiles. Jokes aside, the creators of this nightmare fuel must have seen Blade II at least once. This is the most terrifying zombie type I’ve faced in the franchise so yet.

Even after leveling up and unlocking enough blueprints so my overpowering Crane can farm them for XP fairly effortlessly (assuming I have a strategy, defensible position, and dependable escape route), I still get apprehensive when chasing Volatiles. They never cease to make my skin crawl, man. Also, you must try to play this What Zombie Are You Quiz.

The Last of Us saga

The Cordyceps apocalypse was one of the more imaginative attempts I’d seen in recent years to make an outbreak’s premise more plausible while also depicting something scary. While the typical Runners don’t deviate too much from what we’d anticipate from speedy zombie-like infected (the concept art for their stages of metamorphosis was scarier), the Clicker is unrivaled in horror factor.

The Game of Thrones

In comparison to horror, fantasy creatures (particularly those generated by magic) are more difficult to actually fear me. The Wights and White Walkers are notable exceptions. Their speed, intelligence, ability to battle with weapons, and the Night King’s ability to instantaneously resurrect anyone killed by his army make them a dangerous foe to contemplate confronting. On the initial viewing, the ending of The Hardhome Massacre made my jaw drop.

The series Dead Space

I had to take a breath after running from a necromorph dressed as Isaac Clarke into the elevator on the USG Ishimura and watching this Lovecraftian creature push the door open to almost catch me.

About the quiz

These space-zombies are without a doubt among the most profoundly messed-up creations I’ve ever seen in all of fiction, period. They’re also one of the most physically hazardous and adaptable, morphing into possibly endless forms all in the service of the single aim that motivates their existence: search, kill, infect, repeat.

Capable of coordinating attacks, sneaking up on unsuspecting victims, and armed with different means of completely destroying you (slashing, stabbing, biting, crushing, tearing, melting, and so on), it’s easy to see how the Ishimura’s unprepared crew were swamped in such a short time. Because of the necromorphs’ capacity to emerge from practically anyplace onboard this ship’s labyrinth of vents, hallways, and other apertures, I was never able to totally relax while playing. “No one can hear you scream in space,” as the old adage goes.

The Day of the Dead

When my sisters and I initially attempted to watch this at my grandmother’s place, she forced us to turn it off after zombie-Vivian appeared onscreen before killing Luis. I put on a tough face for my sisters, but I was secretly relieved. That night, I couldn’t sleep because I kept picturing a zombie-brat like that strolling right through Gran’s front door.

Yeah, as much criticism as it’s received over the years in comparison to the original, this is still one of my all-time favorite zombie flicks, with what is, in my opinion, the best intro to an apocalypse ever filmed (and a great song choice to boot, I can’t help but think of this movie now when I hear it).
