The War of the Worlds narrates the occurrences of a Martian invasion, as a man and his brother experience it. A few years before the invasion, the story starts. When Mars is closer to Earth than usual, during the astronomical opposition of 1894, a number of observatories spotlight light blowing on Mars’ surface. In Ottershaw, Surrey, England, the narrator witnesses one of the blasts via the telescope. He alerts Ogilvy, a “famous astronomer,” immediately. Ogilvy promptly rejects the concept that flashes are a sign of Mars life.

He informs the storyteller that “there are one million odds against something wrong with Mars.” For several nights the flashes continue unexplained.

Editor’s Picks

A “falling star” appeared above England early one morning. It collapses on Horsell Common, a wide public field close to Maybury’s narrating home. When the storyteller approaches the spot, he sees around a big cylindrical item embedded in a sandpit a crowd of roughly 20 individuals collects. The thing is in metal and looks hollow. The narrator suspects immediately that the thing was Mars’s. The narrator returns home in Maybury after viewing it for some time. When he next visited the accident scene, the information of the landing circulated and there was a considerable increase in the number of spectators.

Near Narrator’s house lands a falling star and he goes for investigation. Several other scientists have begun investigating the unusual object already. The cylindrical end of a table is a long metal cylinder. When the fade starts to unscrew, the scientists determine that travelers must be indoors. Multitudes of people are gathered and weird Martians finally leave the cylinder. Later, the Narrator realizes that these weird things really are cars that Martians are piloting (the Martian is actually only one part of the great “monster” everyone sees).

Life goes on for those who are not aware of the risk the Martians pose surrounding the crashing site. A soldiers’ unit was activated and soldiers were deployed to inquire. A second cylinder runs over the sky and the neighboring lands. The narrator decides to evacuate with his wife to Leatherhead (another village on the outset of London) during the conflict between the military and the Martians. He leases a neighbor’s horse and cart and rides the rest of the day. He goes back to Woking and returns the cart and the horses after leaving his wife with his family.

About the quiz

The novel begins with the narrator who says Martians were never expected to attack (understandable). Martian cylinders then smash into the countryside of England. The rolls open and show Martians that do not move very well – unless you build up your tank-like trépods and walk over the countryside with the flames of heating, all insight (patent pending). What World of the Worlds character are you?

The storyteller is running and hiding. He takes the Martians from his wife… but then returns back to the Martians. Why is that going to he do? Well, since a) the cart-and-horse he used to go out from town needs to be returned, and b) the British military wants to see the Martians crushed. Perhaps because c) he’s not that clever, too.

The British army fights and loses heavily at this point: the Britons had managed to demolish a Martian tripod, but the Martians are in the British. When the storyteller understands how fatal the Martians are, he hides in his house, where an artilleryman meets him. They walk a little together, but during a further Martian attack, the narrator loses tracks of the artilleryman.
